New Journey

All seemed well in early summer 2005. I had moved into my new house, had spent several hundred hours and dollars on my yard and had it looking really nice. I recall July being pretty much hot and muggy, but other wise uneventful. Most of August was the same as July, and then we heard about a Hurricane that may be headed towards the Gulf of Mexico.

I kept a watchful eye out(actually, I watched the weather channel often) to see just what this storm named Katrina might do. Around August 28th, the whole coastal area realized she was heading towards us. I helped a neighbor board up her house on that ominous saturday morning. She knocked on my door around 11:00 am and asked me for my help.

I was watching the Weather Channel when I heard her knock, and the wind speed of Katrina was somewhere around 155 mph. After about an hour of boarding up her windows, I needed to return home to find more screws and or nails for the rest of her house. When I stopped to watch the current news of Katrina, the winds had unbelieveably risen to over 180 mph. At this point I really became concerned, scared may be more appropriate.

I told Rachel, my neighbor whom I was helping, that I thought we should both evacuate and she whole-heartedly agreed. We finished her house, and she helped me board up my house. We told each other that we would see each other after the storm and talk about it. Little did we know what a storm Katrina would turn out to be......
