Dave, really enjoyed reading the Rust and dust how to, I like how you included some ideas for smaller size models.
You included pressure recommendations for all the airbrush steps except for the finish coat and the dust coat over that, as I'm really trying to improve my airbrush skills could you elaborate a little. Thanks so much for the tutorial. Pat

      Pat,
For the pressure for the finish coat can vary with the type of finish that I want. The lower the pressure the wetter the paint which makes more shine. The higher the pressure the more texture and flatter the finish turns out. Most of the time for weathered models I keep the pressure at 40-50 psi and keep the airbrush about 10"-12" away.

For Floquil Dust I use 15-25 psi and and keep my airbrush at least 12" away. I don't spray the dust directly on the model. I try to spray over top of the model and let the spray fall on it the way dust would naturally settle. I do this a little at a time. Too much will leave a white looking film.

Airbrushing has many variables. It takes practice to get the feel for the paint. Weather, temperature, humidity, the viscosity of the paint, the type of paint and different types of airbrushes make it a little tricky. I don't consider myself an expert by any means, I can only tell you how I do it and what works for me.

      Thanks.
      Dave

Dave, thanks for the additional info, I'm sure it will help improve my skills. Which by the way are at the beginner stages. If you have any other links or info that would be good for a beginner, I'm all ears.
        Thanks Pat

    What a great tutorial, Dave!
Hey, you can just go to a construction site and get any dirt right out of the road--dirt that's been pulverized and silty enough to not have an live things in it. I've used this type of dirt for years and have never had a problem!
Cool tip about the Brilo pads! I never woulda thought of that! I gotta try it!
Thanks for the great tutorial! KARL

Very nicely done. The number of photos showing your steps is very helpful. This last photo is excellent.

    Dave,
    Simply stunning overall effect.
I bet there were times when you thought `Is this all going to work out ?' I know I would.
The magic water looks interesting, or is it just gloss medium in a box?
Do you have an international supplier (Walthers or such?)
    Again Top notch work.

      Thanks Paul,
There were a lot of times when I was wondering if this was going to work out. A couple times I came close to giving up.
Magic Water is a 2 part resin. You can buy it direct from them. Unreal Details.

    Dave,
Thanks for going to the trouble to record the building of this for others. A terrific job. Photos excellent and well explained. I am inspired enough to build one myself. There has to be a place on the layout somewhere for it!
    Best wishes

    I looked at your work...all I say - speechlessly - a masterpiece!!!!!!!!
Personally I work on Chevy Medium truck at 1:24 scale and do weather them. Your work provided an idea of how weathered metal should look.
    THanks!

    Hi Dave,
How did you make rust shape and color varience on the chimney. Your work changed my idea and experience of detail work (it must be devotion). Thanks much for sharing your masterpiece.
