21:05  Tips on Maps

Did you know that the orange map markers or "TAGS" as they are called, in the map view only show for geotagged Albums? They do not show in the map view for individual photos.

Why? My guess would be that if they did ones map may soon be covered with a cumbersome amount of orange tags.

One Location or tag, however, can have many albums associated with it. In this case, when you click on the orange tag you will get a box with a list of albums to select from.

10:50  Helping Viviane with Maps

Hi Viviane!!!

1. Go here ---> <a href="http://public.fotki.com/GaryGS1/friends/friends_maps/antwerp.html";>friends_maps/antwerp</a>
2. Click on the little globe to get the scroll down menu of maps
3. Select Google Earth / then Google Earth will initiate if you have downloaded it on your computer.
4. Google Earth will take you to a location in the Nederlands based on the coordinates I have entered.
5. Now use the bottom navagation menu in Google Earth to move the map in or out / up or down / etc,,, you can change the elevation to see more area or zoom in to get details...
6. You can also explore the left bottom menu of Google Earth's screen to add details to the map view.
7. I have selected in mine that I want to see city boundries, water, volcanoes, etc... You can even select zip codes, restaruants, schools, churches, etc, etc,,,
8. With Google Earth you can go anywhere on the planet. The only limitation is that the quality of the maps changes with the remoteness of the area. Big Cities New York, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Toyko, Sydney, etc will have excellent maps... smaller areas may not but you can still see what's going on...

Does this help??? Gary

Click on the Map below and Take a Virtual Tour via the little Google Earth Globe...

19:50  Getting your Maps set up in Fotki using the Google Earth Virtual Map Feature.

Fotki offers a really cool mapping feature that works with either individual photos or entire albums.

I find that the mapping tools built into Fotki are adequate for general mapping but pinpoint accuracy (if desired) can become very time consuming and tedious. When you click on edit photo properties or album properties you will get the mapping feature box and information at the bottom of the edit screen. With some computer literacy and patience one can easily get started with mapping.

If you want to use Fotki's way do the following. If you would like to try it my way '-) (and save time and be more accurate) go down below to the Google Earth Way. '-)

Go to Photo-session location: and select "New Location" Now click somewhere on the world map where you want to get started and a placemark window will show up. Put the name of the place you want to map in the box... Now the tedious part,,, you have to scroll all around, zooming in and out, until you have loacted the place you want. Click save and you have now mapped that photo or album. You can test it by clicking on the little globe at the end of the subtitle of a photo or the one that appears in the album. From the drop down menu select Google Earth. If you have Google Earth downloaded onto your computer it will take you there.
You are done with that one map... and this is fine for general locations.

Google Earth Way.
Don't be discouraged!!! There is an easier way that I have found. I call it the Google Earth Way. Read on.

I go directly to Google Earth. I type in search box, names of cities or town, zip codes, etc or otherwise browse to find the location that I want. It works pretty fast. Once you have the exact location you want in the middle of the screen do the following.

1. Right click on your mouse and select edit from the menu.
2. A box called Google Earth Edit Placemark will open to the left.
3. Put a checkmark in the little box that says "Advanced Properties"
4. Select "Location" the Latitude and Longitude coordinated will be displayed.
5. This is what you need to paste into your Fotki Location Manager accessible thru your "My Account" settings.
6. So,,, in your "My Account Settings" go to Locations (bottom right) click on (manage) click on Enter Coordinates and this is where you will paste your coordinates from Google Earth into. Make a title. Don't worry about Altitude. Click save.
7. Now go to the picture or album that you want to map. Click on edit, go to location, select your new title of the coodinates you just made, click save and test by clicking on the little globe that now appears with the picture or album. Select Google Earth.
8. Start over and do another one '-) Let me know if I can be of help to you. It's not so bad after you do some... Gary

This picture of my kids is mapped to Downtown Philadelphia where the picture was taken. Click on the thumbnail then click on the little globe at the end of the caption and select Google Earth. Explore... Use the bottom menu of Google Earth to zoom in and out and scroll around. You can even adjust the angle and reset to North... Have Fun... Gary
