Honey Bee Related Questions from Katie!!!

Dear Gary,
Hi my name is Katie I am a 7th grader and I am doing a research project on bees. I would really appreciate it if you could answer a few questions for me. I will put them below.

How long have you been a beekeeper?
HELLO KATIE, I WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS UNDER EACH ONE IN CAPS LIKE THIS.
I HAVE BEEN A BEEKEEPER GOING ON 5 YEARS NOW.

Why did you get involved in this work?
IT STARTED OUT AS A HOBBY AFTER I SAW A DEMONSTRATION AT OUR CAPE MAY COUNTY 4H FAIR IN 2008.
I THOUGHT IT WOULD FIT IN NICELY TO MY FARM WHERE
I GROW VEGETABLES AND HAVE A BEACH PLUM ORCHARD. CONSEQUENTLY, I
JOINED OUR LOCAL JERSEY CAPE BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION WHICH IS ONE OF THE 9 BRANCHES OF THE NEW JERSEY BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION, TOOK A BEEGINNERS BEEKEEPING CLASS AND STARTED WITH 2 HIVES.

Other than working at the museum have you had any other bee related jobs?
I DO NOT WORK AT A MUSEUM / I JUST DID A TALK ON BEES AT THE WETLANDS INSTTUTE. I DID HAVE A PEST MANAGEMENT COMPANY FOR 30 YEARS AND SOLD THAT TO A LARGR COMPANY ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO. ALTHOUGH I DO NOT DO GENERAL PEST CONTROL ANY MORE, I DO USE MY PEST MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE TO FIND / REMOVE AND RELOCATE HONEY BEE COLONIES THAT PEOPLE SOMETIMES HAVE IN THEIR HOMES OR BUILDINGS. IT IS NOT LEGAL TO KILL HONEY BEES IN NJ AND MANY OTHER STATES, SO I SPECIALIZE IN THIS SERVICE IN OUR AREA. MY FORMAL STUDIES WERE AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY MAJORING IN BIOLOGY SO THIS LINE OF WORK CONTINUES TO INTRIGUE ME.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how important do you think a bees role in the environment is? Why?
9-10!!! ALBERT EINSTEIN SAID THAT WITHOUT THE HONEY BEE, MANKIND HAS ABOUT 4 YEARS TO LIVE. IT IS A FACT THAT BEES POLLINATE ABOUT 1/3 OF THE FOOD ON OUR TABLES AND ABOUT 80% OF THAT IS ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE HONEY BEE. THE HONEY BEE COLONY IS A POLLINATING MACHINE! SO WITHOUT THEIR EXISTANCE WE WOULD NOT ONLY HAVE MUCH LESS FOOD AND VARIETIES AVAILABLE FOR MANKIND AND ANIMALS, BUT MANY PLANTS, FLOWERS AND TREES WOULD NOT GET POLLINATED AND CONSEQUENTLY WOULD NOT FARE WELL.

What do you know about colony collapse disorder? Have you had any direct experience with this?
CCD OR COLONY COLLAPSE DISORDER IS A GLOBAL PROBLEM. HOWEVER, IN NEW JERSEY DUE TO A KEEN INTEREST IN BEEKEEPING AND MANY NEW BEEKEEPERS, WE ARE NOT SEEING THIS PROBLEM AS MUCH. . THE NJBA (NEW JERSEY BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION) NOW HAS 1000 MEMBERS. THE HONEY BEE IS OUR STATE INSECT WHICH IS TRUE OF 16-17 OTHER STATES AS WELL. SCIENTESTS THINK THAT CCD MAY BE IN PART ATTRIBUTABLE TO A NUMBER OF THINGS, THESE MAY INCLUDE PESTICIDES, MONO AGRICULTURE, PARASITES, FUNGAL AND VIRAL DISEASES AND RELATED PROBLEMS. FORTUNATELY, I HAVE NOT YET HAD EXPERIENCE WITH CCD.

How would you compare the bees in the museum to the bees that live in the wild?
SOME MUSEUMS DO HAVE LIVE OBSERVATION HIVES FOR THE PUBLIC TO VISIT AND OBSERVE. SINCE HONEY BEES MUST HAVE ACCESS TO THE OUTDOORS TO FORAGE AND SURVIVE IT SHOULD NOT MATTER WHEHTER A HIVE IS IN A MUSEUM OR OR OURDOORS AS LONG AS THE BEES HAVE ACCESS TO WATER, POLLEN AND NECTOR, AND CAN TAKE CLEANSING FLIGHTS, ETC.

Have you seen a change in bee population lately? If so why do you think this is happening? Could climate change be a contributing factor?
HONEY BEE NUMBERS MAY BE DECLINING IN THE WILD BUT THAT IS A DIFFICULT THING TO EVALUATE. THE HEALTHY NUMBERS OF HONEY BEES THAT WE ARE EXPERIENCING IN NJ MAY BE ATTRIBUTABE TO AN INCREASED NUMBER OF BEEKEEPERS AND ORGANIC GARDENERS AS WELL AS MORE SELECTIVE AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF PESTICIDES.
THE JURY IS STILL OUT ON CLIMATE CHANGE. WE WILL HAVE TO SEE HOW THIS PLAYS OUT.

EXTRA INFO!!!
ALTHOUGH NORTH AMERICA HAS OVER 4000 SPECIES OF BEES, THE EUROPEAN HONEY BEE IS NOT AN INDIGENOUS BEE. IT WAS IMPORTED FROM EUROPE IN COLONIAL TIMES WHEN PILGRIMS BRINGING ALONG WITH THEM THEIR HONEY BEE HIVES TO SATISFY THEIR SWEET TOOTH, NOTICED THAT THEIR CROPS PRODUCED MORE WHEN HONEY BEE NUMBERS INCREASED. NOW WE KNOW THE SCIENCE BEHIND POLLINATION...

THANKS FOR YOUR QUESTIONS, KATIE.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT AND PERHAPS YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF SOMEDAY WITH A BEEHIVE OF YOUR OWN!!!

WD-40 Information

Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main ingredient of WD-40? Don't lie and don't cheat.

WD-40 - Who knew! I had a neighbor who bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do....probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I'm impressed! WD-40 who knew? 'Water Displacement #40'. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you. When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stove top. It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.

WD-40 Uses:

1. Protects silver from tarnishing.

2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.

3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.

4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.

5. Keeps flies off cows. (I love this one!)

6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.

7. Removes lipstick stains.

8. Loosens stubborn zippers.

9. Untangles jewelry chains.

10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.

11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.

12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.

13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.

14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.

15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.

16. Keeps scissors working smoothly.

17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.

18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for that nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.

19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!

20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.

21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers...

22. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.

23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open.

24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.

25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.

26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.

27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans.

28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.

29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.

30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.

31. Removes splattered grease on stove.

32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.

33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.

34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).

35. Removes all traces of duct tape.

36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.

37. Florida’s favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.'

38. The favorite use in the state of New York , WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.

39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.

40. Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.

41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.

42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!

43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

P.S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

New Email Notification Feature Feedback!!!

1. Fotki Comment Notification is a neat feature and is similar to facebook's popular notification system.

The default option should be user definable, so that a member can set it the way she or he wants and not have to click the box each time to always appear with or without a checkmark. A good place for this setting might be the Notification Section on the "My Account" page.

Note... Usually I and many others, would copy comment answers, responses or replies into the guestbook of the member who left a photo comment. This new feature would eliminate that step, but it is important to realize that the other person may have email notifications set to "off", and may not ever see the additional activity. Nothing to do about it, just a heads up...

2. I see that Fotki now includes all areas in the notification section:
New comments on my photos
New messages in my guest book
I am Friend of” list updates
About new messages in my journals
About new messages in my forums

Except Videos... add "New comments on my videos" to the list in the "My Account - Notification Section"!!!

Then that would complete the list for now...
The user definable feature of Yes/No ability gives everyone a choice and the frequency of notifications to ones email is cool.

3. There should be a "reply edit delete" for journal, forum and video comments just like there is for photo comments and guestbook entries!!!

4. I am sure I'll add some things but that's it for now '-)))
Take an asprin, I'll be back '-))) Gary

Sending Photos from your iPhone or other mobile device to Fotki!!!

Hi Jen and Tim at http://members.fotki.com/jenandtim/about/

I saw your request for an iPhone app in the Fotki Blog and wanted to share a suggestion with you '-)))

I also have an iPhone and it works great with Fotki... You don't need a special app.

If uploading to Fotki is your only concern, then you can just email a photo from your iPhone directly to the Fotki Album of your choice using the Fotki email to an album feature in the album properties section of any album...

Just go to "Email/MMS address for uploading:" section in an album's properties and create an email address for that album. Then send photos from your iPhone, or any mobile camera/phone device, to that email address!!! You can create an email address for any album and thereby send your photos to the album of your choice by selecting the corresponding album's email address from your contact list... It's a snap!!!

If your desire is to send a photo (s) to multiple social networking sites simultaneously,
such as Fotki and Facebook, etc. then visit Fotki's download page ---> http://downloads.fotki.com/ and select Pixelpipe (www.Pixelpipe.com)
That is a cool app!!!

With Pixlepipe you can, "Use your camera phone as intended and upload easily and directly to your Fotki account through Pixelpipe gateway.
Supports all major mobile phone platforms, including iPhone."

What is a Moo-La???

What is a Moo-La???

This is true and funny...

In yoga class on Thursday evening, Rebecca the yoga instructor
kept repeating the word Moo-La in relationship to the correct posture
she was looking for in the students including me, of course, the only guy
in the room.

She would say, "direct your "Moo-La" to the space between you arches,
when in a standing position. Back straight, standing up tall..."

or...

in a sitting position she would say, " move your "Moo-La" so that it is
perpendicular with the floor"

or...

in a laying down position she would say, "adjust your "Moo-La" so that it
is pointing at the wall." etc...

After about 20 minutes of this "Moo-La" stuff,,, and 10 more times of saying it,
I had to ask out load in the silence between her instructions, What is a "Moo-La"???

She laughed, chuckled a bit,,, some other ladies giggled.
Some, perhaps did not know either? Not sure...

Rebecca, after a pause, said, "your Moo-La is",,, well,,, think of it as giving birth
to a flashlight and it is where the light would point too". That will adjust your hips
to where I want them to be...

Puts a whole new meaning on... where the light don't shine... Gary

General Tipping Information:
Asia and the Pacific: Special care must be taken to insure that your well-meaning gesture is not taken as insulting. If you are unsure, it is best not to tip. If possible, observe the locals and follow their lead.

Europe: Many hotels and restaurants add a service charge to the bill. In most cases, an additional tip is unnecessary. If no service charge is added to your bill 10% is the general rule for restaurant service, a dollar per bag will be appreciated.

Middle East/Africa: While your tip will not be seen as insulting, it may be unnecessary. Once again, the best bet is to do as the locals do.

Central/South America: Many hotels and restaurants add a service charge to the bill, and an additional tip is unnecessary. If not, 10% is the general rule for restaurant service, and a dollar per bag will be appreciated.
