General Tipping Information:
Asia and the Pacific: Special care must be taken to insure that your well-meaning gesture is not taken as insulting. If you are unsure, it is best not to tip. If possible, observe the locals and follow their lead.

Europe: Many hotels and restaurants add a service charge to the bill. In most cases, an additional tip is unnecessary. If no service charge is added to your bill 10% is the general rule for restaurant service, a dollar per bag will be appreciated.

Middle East/Africa: While your tip will not be seen as insulting, it may be unnecessary. Once again, the best bet is to do as the locals do.

Central/South America: Many hotels and restaurants add a service charge to the bill, and an additional tip is unnecessary. If not, 10% is the general rule for restaurant service, and a dollar per bag will be appreciated.

Interesting Video on India / Pakistan Border!!!

I got my second wind after the tour ended and have had a blast...

I went up North towards Nepal by train the next day while you were in flight.
I stayed in an Ashram www.parmarth.com in Rishikesh for 4 days. There was an international yoga and meditation festival going on for 7 days and I caught it just right... 30 bucks a nite.. (120.00 total USD) included a room,,, 3 meals a day... loads of backpackers and new friendships, and all the yoga and meditation classes one could handle... the first day I did four different types of yoga classes... The Condolini yoga class was 2 hours alone... was awesome... my legs are still sore... The sight seeing after classes up in Rishikesh was outstanding... I went for a short walk from the Ashram I was staying and discovered (with the help of my Lonely Planet guidebook) the now defunct and jungle overgrown Ashram of the Maharaji Mahesh Yogi (founder of the meditation that I learned in my college days / and still practice occasionaly - Transendental Meditation or TM for short) I went into his house which is now all delapidated... the jungle moving in... was like a Raiders of the Lost Ark experience... PS... it is also where the Beatles stayed for 2 months in 1968 and wrote their "White Album" I was in their old room,,, was strange!!!

anyway...

So now I am in Singapore for 4 days and experiencing another contrast...
Singapore is sterile... and a shoppers paradise... not my cup of tea,,, I really enjoyed the colors and diversity of India, but there are some great things to see here... like the worlds largest observation wheel (bigger than the one in London) did that today... and great botanical gardens... the list goes on... don't want to bore you... I leave for home in 2 days... one month sure went fast!!!

Best Wishes to you!!! Gary

Greetings from Singapore!!!

My 3 week adventure in India has come to a close!!!
What an amazing and unbelievable trip. Another "One" of a Lifetime...

India is one of the most diverse countries that I have ever visited...
Worlds largest Democracy with over 1.1 billion people...
(a 6th of the worlds population) in a country 1/3 the size of the USA...

It's not uncommon to see Elephants walking down the street in broad daylight!
Camels and Buffalo pulling carts is an everyday occurance,
as is seeing sheep, goats, horses, ponies, donkeys,
and monkeys jumping about and snatching your food,,,

And, of course COWS everywhere since they are sacred...
Yes,,, even in the middle of traffic... all the trucks, taxis, motorbikes and
rickshaws simply go around them!!! See below...

It was like a 24 / 7 BAZAAR!!! Or a zoo without walls or limitations...
All the people that I encounterd were all very nice and I was successful
in handing out over 100 pens and 100 toothbrushes to kids everywhere!!!
Photos on that later...

I arrived in Singapore today and am enjoying the 80 plus weather... It's 2 AM here
and I just finished with a night walk... 82 F and humid!!! I just need a t-shirt and
even so,,, sweating... amazing... we just got lots of snow at home in NJ...

Best Wishes to All!!! Gary

To the Question # 2 "What is your answer to the question: Why people travel??"

There are probably as many reasons why people travel as there are people, but some common silvery threads always seem to shine through!

A need for a "change of scenery", and "escape away from current affairs", or a "quest for new experiences or adventure", in many cases, top the list.

Besides the famous places and historical sites, or the beautiful and awe inspiring vistas, for me it's as much about the story or message I see in the eyes of others as I travel near or far.
Windows of the soul, some say. The hope, the sadness, the desire or despair. Happiness or hopelessness, sometimes all mixed together. A ever changing kaleidoscope of expressions and emotion.

But in the eyes of most everyone I meet, there is a twinkle of inspiration that I feed upon. There is a sense about me that I can not explain, but I feel that there is always something upon which to build.
It's like, something as small as a leaded pencil point being pushed in the right direction has the potential of becoming the text of the next great story. Sometimes, all that is needed is a little sharpening.

It might start with a simple nod, a genuine smile, a polite greeting, or the purchase of a small gift from a street vendor.
A few smiles exchanged, and the world feels a little bit lighter, the air a bit easier to breath and then a hunger for more acts of kindness kicks in.

Here are some images of people from around the world, that shared their gift of a precious moment with me.
I hope that my returned gestures of appreciation and gratitude, whatever they were at the time, were received with as much warmth, as I fondly remember in the badge I created below.
