Hair Resolutions

I'm serious about my hair game ladies! it's time for a change.

I've been relaxed since I was four years old and weaved up since I was in middle school...thanks mama.

I'm still going to relax, but not nearly as often as I was before and I am definitely adopting healthier hair practices.

Thick Ends Challenge-BHM

This is a straight copy and paste from the challenge at BHM.

July 20 through December 20 (that's 5 months). This is a HARDCORE challenge, so if you can't hang, don't join. Here are the rules:

o NO BRUSHING - no ands, ifs, or buts about this

o COMB a MAXIMUM of 1x a week - combing/brushing wears the hair strands over time and eventually leads to split and thin ends

o NO DIRECT HEAT - enough said.

o STRETCH RELAXERS - overlapping of relaxers contributes to the weakening and thinning of hair strands

o 1-2x a WEEK: DEEP CONDITIONING - perform this after every wash (co-washes are exceptions); DC-ing protects the hair by coating it; use protein DCs for strengthening; use moisturizing DCs for slip and moisture

o NO LESS THAN 1x a WEEK: MOISTURIZE - moisturized ends are less prone to breakage and thinning

o LOW-MANIPULATION HAIRSTYLES - you can go all out and protective style (braids, weaves, wigs, buns) or you can wear low-manip (rollersets, twistouts, rodsets). just don't play in your hair often. Protective style ideas:

http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=121045&KW=protective

o 3 PASSES - each challenger is allowed 3 passes. A pass excludes you from one of the above rules. (I.e., 1 pass can be used to comb more than 1x a week for that 1 week only.)

OPTIONAL:

o BI-MONTHLY HENNA TREATMENTS - henna is known to strengthen the hair strand and thicken via coating

o BI-WEEKLY/TRI-WEEKLY: ACV RINSE - flattens the cuticles thus minimizing split ends

o TOSS OUT THE TOWEL and USE A T-SHIRT - use an old-tshirt for blotting your hair dry after washes. this method is gentler on the ends because less snagging occurs.

o SLEEP ON SILK PILLOWCASE - for those who dislike wearing scarves/bonnets for whatever reason, this is hands down the best option

Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise
Aubrey Organics GPB
Mane-n-Tail

5 in 5 Challenge

I realised alot of people want to get to their goals by December, that is 5 months away .. and alot can happen in 5 months. Because I have a goal I want to meet by December also, I decided to create this challenge.

There is no inbetween stage ... like "i want 3 inches by October so im in..." This is a ALL FIVE MONTH CHALLENGE from August 1st - December 31st. However at anytime during December you can update.

Bare in mind ladies that my growth rate is 1/4" a month, but that is not stopping me ...even if all i get for the next 5 months is 1" im staying in this challenge. I am not going to give up.

Only 15 participants can be in this challenge, when there are too many, i find that it can get dead quickly. If you don't update weekly ... you will be kicked out without warning. This isn't a flimsy challenge .. this is hardcore and if you cant hang stop reading from now.

RULES

Wash hair weekly or as often as your can , don't forget to deep condition. A clean scalp is a happy scalp. Im not trying to change the way you do things, if you are comfortable with the way your hair grows and you wash once a month ... Mo power to you.

If you use growth aids, apply night for optimum results
Take ALL of your vitamins... dont lag .. TAKE'EM
Must take a starting picture - not a picture that was taken more than two weeks ago. The latest it can be taken is a week ago and you must add the date the picture was taken
For those that are relaxed, please take a scalp shot so persons can be aware of how much NG you had when you started the challenge (that is if you do not plan to relax until December)

If you trim... take a picture of what you cut and put a ruler next to it...And dont be going to the BSS and getting fake hair and taking pics of that
Your ending pics can be done in a number of ways ...

measure NG
measure using a T-shirt (the ruler ones)
measure length comparing with a body part

What do I have to state as a Participant ?

As stated before - a Starting Picture. For those that are natural you can attempt to stretch the same area of hair monthly, same for Relaxed heads that are more than 2 weeks post.
State your goal
State your regimen
Check at the beginning of every month to give us a progress report on length

Any additional things you feel we as your supporters should know
Join no later than August 2nd ... have pics in no later than August 5th

Why I Started Caring...

In April of 2007, I decided to bleach a patch in the front of my hair honey blonde. I was celebrating my upcoming graduation. The actual dye job went great.

By late August, early September I had about an inch of dark brown new growth. It looked ridiculous to me, so I permed it. I was part of the perm from root to tip crowd...not because I wanted bone straight hair, but because I was ignorant. I permed my bleached hair and it all fell out. I had a square right in the front of my hair the was about 5 inches back from my hair line and 4 inches wide of hair that was an inch short. It was too short to put in a ponytail without gel, too short to braid for a sew-in. It was awful.

I just kept babying that hair until I was able to do something with it. Now, about 10 months later it has grown about 5 inches in the front. Since that unfortunate incident, I have been extremely concerned with my hair and it's health. It's sad that I had to learn through a mistake, but trust, I will never make a mistake like that again.

Hide Your Hair Challenge

I'm a little late adding this, but the challenge isn't even close to being over so here goes:

HIDE YOUR HAIR CHALLENGE

CHECK IN DATE: 15th AUG '08
CHECK OUT DATE: 31 DEC '08

RULES:

hide your hair as much and as long as you can.
hide the length from friends, family and even yourself

Two passes for the next 5 months just to show off if need be. Also if you are in any challenges that require you to show a length shot at the end of it you can also get an exception pass for that.

Benefits

1) Element of surprise. Seeing the length of the your hair at the end of a challenge is always a great thing, especially if you aren't constantly checking it
2) Protective Styles help retain length, no matter what length you are , when you are keeping your hair up, less moisture is being lost from the elements (ok i guess im talking crap but you know what I mean)
3) Stops you from being so obsessive about how much your hair has grown
