Joining the Natural Side

The reasons why I decided to cut off my hair:
-No matter how much I took care of my relaxed hair, it stayed thin.
-I was tired of being dependent on relaxers.
-I was tired of my hair not looking or feeling healthy.
-I knew eventually I could achieve thick hair when I saw other natural heads that looked oh so luscious!
-since I had stopped going to a stylist and began my own retouches, my hair wasn't bone straight anymore, and then it was just a matter of time before I would rethink about whether or not I should keep using relaxers.

I finally cut off my hair on April 3, 2008 and I have not regretted this decision! Although I call it the big chop, I could have actually cut it alot shorter but I wanted to take baby steps! I did cut most of the relaxed strands out and my last relaxer was actually a texlax on Feb. 2008 (mainly in the crown area only). The last texlax on my nape was about 6mths prior, it is a 3c texture and didn't need to be relaxed ever... So I stopped doing that 6 mths ago.

When I still see overprocessed strands poppin' up, I battle it with scissors! I keep my scissors handy to ensure that no more traces of processing is in my hair... this snipping away will probably continue until I am satisfied that no more processed strands are on my head !!

The natural texture of my hair is 3c (nape and sides) and 4a(crown). My hair is oh so soft!! It doesn’t take well to appliance heat and the fact that it is soft and mushy is the reason why relaxers never did my hair justice. My coils and curls were never meant to be treated this way. I also have to learn what products to use as my soft hair can become very weighed down with certain products. I know now that my hair thanks me for not continuing to manipulate and destroy its natural texture and I will continue to keep it healthy by not putting anymore relaxers in it...EVER! I am not against sisters who wear relaxers because it looks good if it is maintained in a healthy way, unfortunately for me it just wasn’t my cup of tea and I had a decision to make.

Going natural is the right decision for me and my hair!

I am not crazy about heat on my hair unless I am deep conditioning with my UBH. When my tresses get longer (around SL stretched) I may try to straighten it w/a ceramic flat iron once in awhile to see my progress in growth and to allow versatility with styling. But my hair will dictate to me if the heat is an option or not. From here on out I want to listen to my hair’s needs instead of my own judgment. Listening to my own judgment is what led my hair to become damaged in the first place.

Cheers to my hair journey! From thin to thick! Wish me Luck!
