The Adventures of Being Natural! ---Part 1

Wow, I haven't worn my hair in it's natural state...since probably when I was in elementary school. Currently I'm going into my Junior year of Highschool ('08).

Being a curly teen: I think as a teen it's probably going to be a bit harder for me to wear my hair out in school. People can be so judgemental in highschool, I don't think many learn to wake up until they get to College where people are coming from so many different places it doesn't really matter anymore.

August 10th, 2006: I'm glad to report that I wore my hair out today. I have lots of pictures with me wearing headbands, but that's usually lounge around the house-wear.

The Reactions: I got lots of stares, but I didn't try to pay attention to anyone. I loved my hair and that was all that mattered today. Hopefully I'll be able to wear my hair like this in highschool. I probably will though, I need to start wearing my hair down more. It's definitely helping with the frizz on the top.

Why I love my natural hair:

1) Styling time is as easy as wash and go, I don't need to worry about flating my hair with a blow dryer, or retouching my ends with a flat-iron.

2) My hair looks better. When my hair was flattened down it always looked tousled and frizzy, it was constantly in a bun or 2 ponys... and well, I can do that with my natural hair! I used to brush and comb my hair all of the time when it was straight, now I treat it like fine silk.

3) I believe it reflects my personality a lot more. To me, my curly hair screams fun a lot more than my usual boring ponytails and buns did. I think it makes me feel better about myself and that I don't need to care what other people think.

4) It's easy to take care of, condition it, wash it, moisturize it...and who cares if it gets wet?
I used to DREAD coming from my hair dresser to find that it was humid, or raining, or BOTH. I never liked to run away from water, I thought it was stupid to have to cover up your hair and hide like it would melt off. So...many times I didn't care, but my hair would look jacked up... and back into a ponytail it went. It never mattered that my hair was straight, I never wore it down anyway. The frizz came 10 seconds after my hair was done.

Why Naturals Have More Fun!:

1) We don't have to hide from rain, the pool, waterparks, anything that has water attached to it. Infact, many of us love the was our hair looks wet anyway!

2) We don't care what others think about us. If you like our hair, good! If you don't, too bad ;)

3) We can do whatever we want! (Charlie Brown :-P) Our hair is so diverse in it's natural state, if we want a striaght look we can straighten it for a while, if we're tired of it...wash and go. There are so many beautiful natural styles our hair can be manipulated into.

4) Put it up, let it down.. we can be proud of our mane of hair. It sets us apart from our Europeanized Society, as it should. We stand out, and our natural esscence follows. This is not a fashion trend, it's not a statement, it's pride for who we are and what we look like. And that is where are true beauty shines. :D

Black women can grow their hair too...psh

When I first started this journey I didn't think my hair was reallly gonna grow. Like my whole life I've grown up thinking only the other races can grow hair. Even when I saw all the comparison pictures I was just like...well it probably won't work for me, but I'm gonna try it to embrace my natural texture.

And dogit it worked!!!

For those who are just trying the long hair journey, don't think that you HAVE to find the girl with longest hair's regimen and go out to buy every product that person owns and follow it to a tee. I know that's what I was trying to do! But the key to hair growth is one thing only: moisture. That's it, nothing fancy or special about it. Treat your hair right and give it lots of moisture.

But yea totally...

No heat has been the biggest factor for me not just for length, but definitely health :)

I am about a 1/2 inch to an inch away from arm pit length when I stretch my hair in the front, but I'm thinking I should have a visible armpit length by sometime next year. I'm thinking by June I'll shot for bra strap. My ultimate length will be waist length (straight), but that's just to see if I can get there. If I'm not liking the long hair I'll maintain brastrap.

FAQ

Are you mixed?

My mother's side is jamaican, and my father is mixed with black and white. No idea what the exact heritage of his mother or father is. Usually if you ask me I'll just say I'm mostly black but I think I'm just lazy about explaining my exact heritage. I am sure everyone is mixed in some form or another, though.

What did you use to dye your hair?

My hair is naturally brown with blondish/light brown highlights which is really seen clearly in the sunlight, which is why it looks like my hair is a different color in the sun than in regular lighting.

I got it dyed with this reddish color over at sophiasunflower (sophiasunflower.com) so if you have questions about the dye I'd contact her. My mom actually hated the color because she likes my natural color better...but oh well I can always grow it out.

I recently dyed my hair red with henna, it gave me a kinda deep auburn color I guess. It's bright red in direct sunlight.

What products do you use?

My HGs are:

Blended Beauty's Curl Quenching Conditioner and Aubrey Organics HoneySuckle Rose Conditioner

BB Happy Nappy Styles Moisturizer, and Curls Milkshake

DT - Henna! And any conditioner mixed with any type of oil. This week I'm experimenting with coconut oil and BB CQC

What is your regimen?

Co-wash daily, or at least 3 days a week if I'm lazy. On most days I cowash at least twice (morning and night)

I just co-wash with CQC, detangle with my shower comb in sections, leave a bit of conditioner in after quickly running water to my hair to clump my hair together and then I smooth in Happy Nappy Styles or leave it as is.

I don't really do DT's but I'll probably start since it's winter and my hair is going to need it... so DT's once a week.

I don't take many pills anymore, I'm trying to get everything from my diet.

Hope that answers most questions!
