Monday 4/7/83 Went to Careers 83. Played pool with Scrooge. Bought 9 records at second hand shop.
Friday 8/7/83 Bought trailer home. Got ˝ yard of Red Scoria and 20 gallons of white gravel and unloaded and spread it at 5 Wyles Place. Fixed broken shackle on trailer. Got stuck with keys locked in car. – called NRMA out. Watched earthquake on Telly.
Monday 11/7/83 Paid Mrs Nions $191 for flowers. $20 balance for Park Royal. Alex bought me a Snowy River Akubra hat. I bought a pair of Moleskins. Organised order of service with Ian Cullen. NRMA – got accommodation directories. Packed trailer and most of Alex’s gear.
Friday 15/7/83 Picked up suits $165 Dinner at 5 Wyles Place. Buck’s party – the lads tried to skirt me but I was too good. Kippax Tavern & Pot Belly & Blind Beggars. 3 schooners, 1 jug, 13 middies at Beggars.
Sat 16/7/83 Got married 3:00 – 3:30 pm. Photos to 5:30 pm. Reception to 9:00 pm. Stayed at Park Royal Motel. Cars $260 Grog $300 Suits $165
Sun 17/7/83 Got up at 11:30 am. Went to folks and opened pressies. Went to Nions and opened pressies. 6 cans of Fosters. Chinese for tea. Watched Cuckoo’s Nest and Apocalypse Now.
Mon 18/7/83 Left Park Royal at 10:00 am. Went to folks and grabbed Jed. Went to Nions and said goodbye. Arrived at Anna Bay at 10:30 pm.
Wed 20/7/83 Left Anna Bay at 8:00 am. Arrived at Phil Severn’s at 8:30 pm. Good trip up, a bit of rain past Grafton, hard to see.
Thurs 21/7/83 Unpacked trailer and ute and packed ute for honeymoon. Left for Bribie Island. Paid $20 deposit for Room No 1 Surfside flats for 9 nights.
Sat 30/7/83 Drove to Chermside. Axle snapped.
Wed 3/8/83 Sussed out the bush fencing job. Bought gum boots, 8” pliers, and wire strainers.
Thurs 4/8/83 Went to Kennards and hired a post hole borer. Bought 10 rolls of barb wire and 60 steels. Brought them back and unloaded them at Phil’s. Started work at 10:30 am. Bored post holes all around paddock to creek on main gate side. Replaced rusty barb one section from gate to cattle yards and strained. Correctly refastened the strainer ties.
Friday 5/8/83 Replaced 4 barbs to right of main gate. Replaced two round posts with steels in same section. Replaced rusty wire in section to the left of gate on three wires. Correctly tied wire off at strainers. Cut wedge from gum sapling and placed it in top hinge of gate LHS. Cut the rest of the posts (about 30) and bored post holes.
Monday 8/8/83 Worked on chainsaw – pulled motor apart and cleaned it. Borrowed Bob’s chainsaw and cut 4 stay holes in strainers and cleared scrub from top fence line. Cut 4 stays from gum trees and placed either side of main gate, next to yards and near creek. Strained 3 wires near yards. Rerouted wires to strainer post and filled gap to yards with three rails cut by axe from gum trees and secured with Queensland hitch. Bought chainsaw fuel $1 Smokes $1-89
Tuesday 9/8/83 Went to hospital. Appointment with surgeon in two weeks. Cut three big stays to right of gate and adjacent to fence line. Secured stay on right of main gate with Queensland hitch.
Saturday 13/8/83 Went to the EKKA. Looked at Cattle, woodchop, ring events, cyclone and ARC fencing stands, QCL display and bought jackaroo’s handbook, watched sheepdog trials, Elfinvale stud kelpie won with 95 points out of 100. Left at 5:00pm.
Sunday 14/8/83 went to Coorparoo Baptist Church. Mrs Sev’s for lunch. Went to see Aunty Mabel & Tot at Wynnum but they weren’t home. Went to Wynnum wading pool and 123 Lunga Street, Camphill.
Friday 19/8/83 Ran 4 new wires from creek to yards corner strainer. Ditched some old wire and rolled and saved some. Retied and strained 4 wires from yards to corner stay. Put $50 lay by on McCulloch Pro Mac 650 Chainsaw – total price $429 Sharpening jig - $20. New chain $21. Went to Ipswich fellowship at Bremer High School.
Saturday 20/8/83 Played 500 at Bob & Jan’s. Went out to highway block and collected some carnivorous plants and followed the gas road out.
Sun 21/8/83 Cut about 40 posts for Les Darcy.
Mon 22/8/83 Cut strainer posts, 2 line posts & 2 stays and put them in on new fence line on highway side. Cleared timber out of road of new fence line. Went to hospital – surgery in 8 weeks. Stay in hospital for a week and take it easy for 6 weeks. Started learning dairy game.
Tues 23/8/83 Ran new fence line to replace defunct corner near highway bridge. All new wires IOWA barb 2.5 mm Put 8 steels in. Straightened 3 spilt posts. Worked in dairy again. Milked 2 bales. DPI herd recorder was there this morning. Bob will leave Vagabond and saddle.
Wed 24/8/83 Finished new fence line. Twitched steels on to wire with tie wire $5 (my money) Put 2 posts cut from timber on property on either side of the Creek and ran flood curtain. Did a bit of fencing on dairy. Top barbs. Milked 2 bales.
Thurs 25/8/83 Ran bottom wire from strainer at main gate and highway side down 20 yards and from creek strainer to telephone pole post. Put 3 droppers in flood curtain. Cleaned some wire up. Fenced on dairy retying and restraining. Worked in dairy. Alex milked a couple of cows. Cashed cheque and paid $130 on chainsaw lay-by.
Fri 26/8/83 Put 6 steels in highway top section and tied down. Strained one wire. Tied other highway section up. Put 2 droppers in rocky section up from gate. Cleaned up loose barb and brought it all home. Star Warts 510 ruptured LR udder. Milked out by hand. To turn pump on – change pipe taps on tank near refrigeration unit.
Sat 27/8/83 Milked and broke down machinery. ELF 501 went berko and bent a steel air pipe Milked. Bonus Star had a go (15) One of the sight glass screw cap rubbers flipped up. Mothers milking calves are Gay (34) and Sapphire (44) both predominantly white cows.
Sun 28/8/83 Started milking with Bob to learn the ropes. Milked – everything went well. Drenched Star Warts with panacur 10 (35 mms) Milked at night – a few ticks starting to come. Rang Andrew Cottam about Photos. 4 mins to Nelsons Bay.
Mon 29/8/83 Milked twice. Started Gay 34 off. Star Wars and Gay broke out. Repaired yards and fixed gate to dairy. Strained wire on tanker road. Learnt how to start river pump and irrigation pipe valves and filling the dip.
Tues 30/8/83 Milked. Star Wars 510 doing well. Gay 34 doing well but needs leg rope and nervous towards end of milking. Watched Bob plough and debogged tractor. Spoke to Tony Wright from CSIRO about Water Hyacinth and the predatory beetle. Won’t control it. Start cleaning it out mid November to allow pupae to hatch out properly. Repaired dairy feed bins. Fixed them securely to rails with Cobb & Co hitches. Milked.
Wed 31/8/83 Milked. Fencing near laneway. Repaired bridge. Nearly bogged ute. Picked Ken up from Shakes. Checked out 123 Lunga and took some photos. Milked. Took 15 bales of hay down. Gay went berko and bolted out through dairy.
Thursday 01/09/83 Milked. Started to dry Pearl off. Went to town, bought notebook for dairy records. Sat on tractor while Bob ploughed – learning the ropes. Fuel line to injectors broken. Burnt baling twine from around hay racks. Fixed boiler tap in dairy but it still leaks. Milked. Repaired broken rail near road entry to dairy and put another rail up with Cobb & Co hitches. Left rail across main gate as well.
Fri 2/9/83 Milked. Dried up Francisca 80. Glenda 17. Rhonda 81. Pearl 503. Repacked dam pump with graphite. Ran three barbs near dairy gate to keep Toppa away from the rails. Shovelled most of the dirt off the concrete on the outside of the dairy. Milked.
Sat 3/9/83 Milked. Dipped. Drenched. Took 3 springers from dry cow paddock to Springer paddock. Put 4 dry cows to dry cow paddock. Shunted cows off road and out of improved pasture paddock. Filled Billy’s tank. Put new twine on river pump foot valve. Milked,
Mon 5/9/83 Milked. Fay 52 calved after milking, slow but OK. Good big bull calf. Dug hosing out trench to one shovel depth and about 20’ out. Dug trench in front of dairy for rain run off. Brought fencing gear back from dairy. Repaired fence at one end of hay paddock and put 2 stays in. Fed 12 bales of hay. Milked. Milked Fay 52 ran it out on the floor because of the colostrum. Dinner with Hedley & Billy.
Tues 6/9/83 Milked. Cleaned foot valve on dam pump and primed. Cleaned some Water Hyacinth away. Welded 2 steels together to remove the water hyacinth from the dam. Blew fuse in fuse box. Removed oil line from oil filter to oil pump on tractor. Sussed out dairy gates and main road gate to Scrivens. Milked. Topsy in wrong paddock. Put tie wire around dairy gates. Bonus Star went berserk. Don’t remove foremilk. Couldn’t get mastitis treatment into Royal Beau or Coolantha.
Wed 7/9/83 Milked. Sandy’s gone bush – not milked. Put new Cocky gate on road to Scrivens. Fixed dairy gates so they swing and close properly. Fixed dam pipe. Hedley told us we don’t need to use the leg rope on Bonus Star. I said “Yes we do.” He said “No you don’t, I’ll show you.” Bonus Star proceeded to cow kick the poop out of him.
Tue 13/9/83 Milked. Put new cocky’s gate in hay yard outside dairy. Milked. Put Sally’s milk into the vat. Heaps of ticks. Brown Eyes calf looks pretty crook.
Wed 14/9/83 Milked. Put sally & Brown Eyes in with calves. Brown Eye’s calf died. Burnt calf, after birth and rubbish. Pulled Brown Eyes after birth out. Milked Counted 40. went back for the other 4. sapphire last.
Thur 15/9/83 Milked. Brown Eyes not feeding the other calves. Put Sally in after she was milked by machine. Cleaned footvalve. Milked. Royal 69 missing but came to the gate. Cows got out of gate and into Phil’s. Put suppository into Brown Eyes. Put Fay in with calves. Herd recorder Dean came today. Master herd record sheet comes out every 6 months. Went to fill rain tank but council have disconnected the main.
Sat 1/10/83 Milked. Fame calved. Bull calf. Broke her in OK, but she kicked me. Duchess’s front left quarter milking water and tight. Milked. 5 cows got out of gate.
Mon 3/10/83 Milked. Not much out of Duchess’s FL quarter. Dipped herd including Springer heifer Clarice. Milked 560 litres. Put Pencommas Blue into Duchess quarter.
Thur 6/10/83 Went to Bodega to celebrate birthdays. Had a Lexcen’s Liberty Lyncher.
Fri 28/10/83 Milked. 660 litres. No bacteria count. Finished writing black board up. Milked.

Thur 3/11/83 Milked. New rails under feed silo. Cut stump to support feed bin. Fixed oats paddock fence. Milked. Hedley bored up again. Hedley fixed tractor. Cut of switch not working. Not releasing governor. 1. Always cover tractor exhaust. 2. Never put spray lines across laneway. 3. Collect all baling twine & barbed wire. 4. Never plough over clover. 5. Change draw bar adjustment over.
Tue 29/11/83 Milked 580 litres.
Tues 6/12/83 Milked. Finished fence. Milked. Had a go at Hedley. Left for Port Macquarie. At 8:30 pm.
Wed 7/12/83 Arrived Port Macquarie at 6:00 am. Went to tourist attractions. Fantasy Glades etc. Dinner at Country Comfort Motel. Ally really sick.
Thur 8/12/83 Went to Timbertown and got 5 Wanted style posters printed for flatulence offences but promptly left them in the toilet. Left Wauchope at 12:30 pm. Arrived home at 10:00 pm.
Tue 13/12/83 Milked. Dipped herd. 23 dry cows. Topped dip up. Got crook from dip and vomited throughout the evening milking. Went to hospital – stayed overnight. Ally broke windscreen coming home from hospital.
Wed 14/12/83 Left hospital at 11:00 am. Picked up ute from K&Rs. $123.40. Milked. Pulsator lines playing up.
Sat 17/12/83 Milked. Planted forage sorghum in Springer paddock. Bled tractor after Hedley ran it out of fuel. Towed tractor with ute. Milked. Leo & Elke Weid for dinner. Hedley destroyed cultivator and Springer gate and rails.
Wed 28/12/83 Milked. Feed arrived 3.54 tonnes. Felled tree and phone lines. Repaired with crossed line the first time. Milked. Warren & Helen McNaughton for dinner.

Wed 14/9/83 Milked. Put sally & Brown Eyes in with calves. Brown Eye’s calf died. Burnt calf, after birth and rubbish. Pulled Brown Eyes after birth out. Milked Counted 40. went back for the other 4. sapphire last.
Thur 15/9/83 Milked. Brown Eyes not feeding the other calves. Put Sally in after she was milked by machine. Cleaned footvalve. Milked. Royal 69 missing but came to the gate. Cows got out of gate and into Phil’s. Put suppository into Brown Eyes. Put Fay in with calves. Herd recorder Dean came today. Master herd record sheet comes out every 6 months. Went to fill rain tank but council have disconnected the main.
Sat 1/10/83 Milked. Fame calved. Bull calf. Broke her in OK, but she kicked me. Duchess’s front left quarter milking water and tight. Milked. 5 cows got out of gate.
Mon 3/10/83 Milked. Not much out of Duchess’s FL quarter. Dipped herd including Springer heifer Clarice. Milked 560 litres. Put Pencommas Blue into Duchess quarter.
Thur 6/10/83 Went to Bodega to celebrate birthdays. Had a Lexcen’s Liberty Lyncher.
Fri 28/10/83 Milked. 660 litres. No bacteria count. Finished writing black board up. Milked.
Mon 31/10/83 Milked. Ploughed. Milked.
Thur 3/11/83 Milked. New rails under feed silo. Cut stump to support feed bin. Fixed oats paddock fence. Milked. Hedley bored up again. Hedley fixed tractor. Cut of switch not working. Not releasing governor. 1. Always cover tractor exhaust. 2. Never put spray lines across laneway. 3. Collect all baling twine & barbed wire. 4. Never plough over clover. 5. Change draw bar adjustment over.
Tue 29/11/83 Milked 580 litres.
Tues 6/12/83 Milked. Finished fence. Milked. Had a go at Hedley. Left for Port Macquarie. At 8:30 pm.
Wed 7/12/83 Arrived Port Macquarie at 6:00 am. Went to tourist attractions. Fantasy Glades etc. Dinner at Country Comfort Motel. Ally really sick.
Thur 8/12/83 Went to Timbertown and got 5 Wanted style posters printed for flatulence offences but promptly left them in the toilet. Left Wauchope at 12:30 pm. Arrived home at 10:00 pm.
Tue 13/12/83 Milked. Dipped herd. 23 dry cows. Topped dip up. Got crook from dip and vomited throughout the evening milking. Went to hospital – stayed overnight. Ally broke windscreen coming home from hospital.
Wed 14/12/83 Left hospital at 11:00 am. Picked up ute from K&Rs. $123.40. Milked. Pulsator lines playing up.
Sat 17/12/83 Milked. Planted forage sorghum in Springer paddock. Bled tractor after Hedley ran it out of fuel. Towed tractor with ute. Milked. Leo & Elke Weid for dinner. Hedley destroyed cultivator and Springer gate and rails.
Wed 28/12/83 Milked. Feed arrived 3.54 tonnes. Felled tree and phone lines. Repaired with crossed line the first time. Milked. Warren & Helen McNaughton for dinner.
Sat 31/12/83 Russell & Annette Warnken and family stayed the night.
Sun 1/1/84 Pulled a Sorghum plant up – 5 feet high.
Mon 2/1/84 Interview at Jindalee Dairy farm – wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole. Milked twice.
Thur 5/1/84 Ken picked Hosie up and they both stayed the night.
Wed 22/2/84 Left Eulolo Friesian Stud after milking twice.
