Saturday 17/3/84 Interview at “Collingwood” at Gunning.

Saturday 24/3/84 Missed out on Gunning job.

Saturday 7/4/84 Drove to “Hollywood” Crookwell for a job interview.

Tuesday 1/5/84 Guy Noble, the manager of “Hollywood” rang and said we could come out on Friday and that he would try and get the phone on by then. Guy will come over early Monday morning.

Wednesday 3/5/84 Packed trailer ready to go tomorrow.

Thurs 4/5/84 Drove to homestead on Hollywood. Unloaded trailer and ute. Drove to Canberra and stayed the night.

Fri 5/5/84 Moved in to house on Hollywood. Drove to house with Tim and folks. Unloaded trailer and ute. Started unsuccessfully for Dungannin. Heater played.

Sat 6/5/84 Ally’s folks brought another load out from Dungannin.

Mon 7/5/84 Started work on Hollywood. Put roll bar on old Massey tractor. Changed oil and oil filter on old Massey. Dumped Sudax hay with tipper trailer. Picked up header comb. Towed Toyota to Crookwell. Knocked off at 5:00 pm.

Tues 8/5/84 Picked up plough and put spear point tynes on. Filled oil up on tractor and fuel. There was water in the fuel. Changed fuel filters, put new battery in and bled the whole fuel line. Worked on old Suzuki, cleaned old gaskets up and generally cleaned things up. Put wool packs around tank and seat of my bike. De bogged Massey. Put fence around field bins – 2 dead sheep.

Wed 9/5/84 Mustered River paddock and Lamb paddock, pulled rams out and put them through footbath for footrot. Put ewes back to Lamb paddock. Guy got bogged in ration paddock. Took nut up to Dave – dozer driver. Cleaned up loose grain at field bins and put good grain back into field bins.



Thur 10/5/84 Mustered Sandhill, and Gibson’s 1 & 2. Pulled rams out and put them through the footbath. Did a few flies and trimmed few feet. Mustered Top Paliners and footbathed them and Bottom palmers. Flies and trimmed a few feet. Took Sandhill and Gibson rams back to Junction. Gibsons 1 & 2 ewes back. Took Top & Bottom palmers back to Junction. Killed abysmally. Bossy went OK. Knocked off at 6:00 pm. Footrot treatment:
INFECTED MOB footbath and move to a clean paddock. Formalin (formaldehyde 5%) ("Formol", "Formalin") - 1 part to 19 parts water.

Fri 11/5/84 Helped David (dozer driver) set up contour banks in shed paddock with theodolite. Ploughed ration paddock. Got bogged below dam. Signed lease for house. Did chores, chased Charlie in. Paid P/E 7 – 11/5/84 $188.60

Mon 14/5/84 Fixed flood curtains in Watson’s, River Paddock, River Mountain, Hut Mountain, Aubyn vale & Big Mountain. Fixed fence from Shed into Ridge where Guy cut it for the dozer to go through. Oiled fencing pliers to loosen them up a bit.

Tues 15/5/84 Mustered Bottom Pennings. Drenched with 10cc Ranizole. 500 lambs/weaners, some hoggets, both sexes. About 15 flystruck, some bad. Ran mob through footbath twice. Bossy spewed up bad, probably from Formalin in the footbath. Cross ploughed largest block in Ration paddock. Kerry & her boys arrived.

Wed 16/5/84 Did flies in River – 4 Watson’s – 2 Gibson’s – 3 Lane – 6 Cross ploughed Ration paddock until I bogged the tractor at 4:15 pm.

Fri 18/5/84 Cross ploughed Gibsons Phalaris. Killed 2 doggers. Chores both ends. Stabled Penelope and Charlie. Ran wethers trough footbath twice and let them go.

Sat 19/5/84 Cut 2 loads of box gum firewood from River paddock and brought it home in Hollywood Red Toyota. Dad brought drill, bits and hand saw up. David brought 5 rabbits for the dogs.

Mon 21/5/84 Pulled fenceline out of airstrip. Rolled ring lock and barb up and pulled steels out and put in wire room. Worked on Guy’s commodore sump.

Tues 22/5/84 Cut two mickey bulls. Pulled strainer posts, rails and steels out of airstrip fence and took back to wire room. Did flies in oats paddock with hand shears – 11 of them.

Wed 23/5/84 Killed two doggers.

Mon 28/5/84 Sowed oats in ration paddock.

Tues 29/5/84 Sowed oats in Ration paddock and Gibson’s Phalaris 1.

Wed 30/5/84 Sowed oats in Gibson’s Phalaris 2. 13 hectares. Cut load of firewood for Guy. Took plough off Ford tractor and put blade on. Penelope rations – ľ bran 1 oats Painkiller. Charlie ration - 1 oaten chaff. 1 Lucerne chaff. 1 oats. Tisha Ľ bran 1 oaten chaff 1 Lucerne chaff.

Thur 31/5/84 Cut dead trees up in Sandhill ready for burning. Put box on back of my bike. Took Penelope up to dam and took her out at 3 pm. Chain on Guy’s chainsaw is stretched and needs a link taken out.

Fri 1/6/84 Guy & Madeline in Sydney. Cut trees up in Sandhill and started burning. Killed sheep but broke salvage (fat cover). Took two loads of hay to the dump from the hayshed and put 4 gates around it but the geese still get in. Put Penelope in the dam for 50 minutes as treatment for her would after crashing into barb wire fence in a thunderstorm. She got off the rope. Goulburn Base Hospital rang for me to go in on Sunday.
Sat 2/6/84 Put Penelope in the dam. Took rugs off all the horses. Cut meat up. Folks and Deb & Steve came up. Rang Darrobee about Nellies pedigree. Ring Mike Donelan and Dudley Hopkins about dog. Sold Bossy for $400 to Mr D Serone Dunoon Road, Lismore 2480
but changed my mind when I saw him demonstrating in the yards with small children.

Mon 4/6/84 Pushed timber up for burning in Sandhill. Cut firewood with my chainsaw in Sandhill.

Tue 5/6/84 Mustered Watson’s. Should have been 485 – must have missed some. Drenched with 10 mls Nilverm concentrate. Cleaned drench guns out. Took rams to house yards and drenched with 15 mls of Ranizole and did 2 for bad feet with foot shears. Footbathed twice. Burnt in Sandhill fir the rest of the day.

Wed 6/6/84 Burned in Sandhill. Collected firewood. Ally came out at lunch time. Worked on boom spray in front of the truck. Killed dogger for Guy from Oats paddock. Best effort yet – only broke the selvage once on the hind leg. Guy said we could have his tool cabinet.

Thur 7/6/84 Mustered Shed paddock with Bruce Noble. Mustered Ridge – nightmare. Drenched and foot bathed twice. 4 flies in Ridge. A dozen weaners in Ridge creek. Tried to start grader. Asked Guy to house warming.

Fri 8/6/84 Jump started grader. Dug and cleaned culverts and pipes out on Hollywood road. Alley bought thermos flask $34.

Sat 9/6/84 Drove to Leeton and bought “Cobber” from Mike Donelan from Bullenbong Stud for $600.

Mon 11/6/84 Dad’s birthday, also Alan Anderson & Bruce Noble.

Tues 12/6/84 Used Ford & blade to push and pull burnt out logs up to big box tree. Split tyre. Got new retread on tractor rim. Put tyre on split rim by myself. Split rims can be very dangerous because the tyre side-wall has an area of perhaps 7x20x3.14=440sq. At a tyre pressure of say 30psi, that is about 6 tons of force trying to tear the wheel apart. If the split rim is unseated, it will become a dangerous projectile. The area manager for AIA had lis leg ripped off when a split rim on a rig let go and blew him up into the rafters in the shed. He now rides a 4 wheel bike to do his farm work, but most of his work is now office bound.

Wed 13/6/84 Mustered Sandhill. Drenched and foot bathed twice. Took 3 crook footed ewes out. Trimmed feet and put in Top Palmers. Took one out with the staggers see picture on right. Typical staggers presentation. Their back legs usually sway to one side. Drenched and double foot bathed 99 ewes out of G Phalaris. Ditto for 378 weaners out of Gibson Phalaris 2. Cleaned footbath out.

Thur 14/6/84 Pushed logs up for burning in Sandhill. Helped Bruce muck out Charlies stable.

Fri 15/6/84 Organised gear for clearance sale on “Walwa” and loaded onto Toyota.

Mon 18/6/84 Unloaded truck load of super in Sandhill. Killed dogger with David Anderson also doing one. Unloaded improved pasture seed.

Tue 19/6/84 Replaced tyres on Kensit’s plough. Loaded plough onto Toyota. Killed dogger.

Wed 20/6/84 Took chisel plough back to Hilton Kensit at Llandillo. Moved haystack from machinery shed to back of stable shed. Guy stacked Toyota into gully. Straightened tie rod. Caught 36 mice and 8 huge rats.

Thur 21/6/84 Sowed improved pasture – rye grass, sub clover and Phalaris in Sandhill. Snapped depth arm collar pin. Meter broke – repaired it. Repaired disintegrated harrows.

Fri 22/6/84 Sowed Sandhill. Got bogged 3 times. Snapped collar twice.

Sat 23/6/84 House warming party with about 30 odd people. Pressies: Arthur and Betty – Mini peach; Dad & Mum – gardening tools & pansies; Guy & Maddie – Rose; Bruce & Marg – Chocolates; Vi & Gordon – champagne; Vince & Rita – carton of grog; Deb & Steve – Jigsaw; Ron $20.

Mon 25/6/84 Finished sowing Sandhill. Broke and welded up harrows.

Tues 26/6/84 Foot pared crook wethers. Treated them. Killed 3 doggers, David did 2. Guy complimented my style. Moved super from Sandhill back to sheds.

Wed 27/6/84 Helped vet pull calf out of heifer – dead calf. Cleaned Bruce’s dog fridge. Early mark to work Cobber.

Thur 28/6/84 Preg tested Col Brett’s cattle. Watched Guy spray paint Bens’ bike.

Fri 29/6/84 Paid $565 P/E 9/6/84 – 29/6/84 3 weeks.

Wed 4/7/84 Heavy snow six inches on the ground. Guy drove to our place and said take the day off.

Thur 5/7/84 Killed 2 house sheep. Did an excellent job. Guy complimented me again. Repaired jib crane for Ford. Made brackets to house Honda petrol motor on cement mixer. Mucked out Bruce’s stables. Swept workshop. Repaired Ferguson trailer.

Fri 6/7/84 Started making foot bath at house yards. Set lamb marking gear up at house yards and into Top Palmers. Drove to Braidwood. 2 ˝ hours.

Sat 7/7/84 Killed 2 sheep with Vince.

Tues 10/7/84 Mustered heifers out of Guy’s house paddock. Injected them, with 20 mls penicillin and Hydra streptomycin. AJ & Trish arrived.

Mon 16/7/84 Crutching. Caught elves and skirted.

Wed 18/7/84 Crutching. Welding gates.

Thur 19/7/84 Shed work crutching

Fri 20/7/84 Shed work. Crutching.

Thur 28/7/84 Preg tested Col Brett’s cattle.

Mon 6/8/84 Went to work but couldn’t get over either crossing. Walked into Hollywood. Bulk dead lambs and a few ewes. Protocol and Glucose got a few of them up.

Fri 10/8/84 Lunch time start because I couldn’t get over the flooded creek again.

Fri 31/8/84 Marked Burns lambs 591. Jetted and drenched Burns ewes.

Sun 2/9/84 Gave Cobber a run around the Wilson’s wethers.

3-6/9/84 Crutching

Mon 24/9/84 Moved 2 loads of oats from field bin to silo. Cemented other side of footbath. Cemented 9 posts in for race. Did Bruce’s chores and got 5 eggs. Took distributor, carby, coil, starter motor, alternator off ute.

Wed 26/9/84 Pulled motor out of ute. Pulled calf out of heifer but it died.

Mon 15/10/84 Lamb marked River paddock. 402 lambs 400 ewes 100% Took mob back to River paddock and brought Lane/Watson’s in.

Wed 24/10/84 Took Alex to Goulburn hospital for ultrasound.

Thur 25/10/84 Sexed weaners Bushes & Gibson. Wethers to Lane. Ewes to house paddock. Crutched, drenched & culled rams.

Fri 26/10/84 Borrowed Wal’s two tipper trucks and loaded with Triticale. Replaced brake shoes on my ag bike. Swapped leading and trailing shoes on the front.

Wed 31/10/84 Moved 8 loads of Triticale to silo.

Mon 5/11/84 Finished moving Triticale from field bins to silo. Brought auger back. Classed 950 hogget ewes.

Fri 9/11/84 Tool Alex to Goulburn for scan. Not looking good. Drove to Canberra.

Sat 10/11/84 Deb’s wedding. MC.

Sun 11/11/84 Drove home 4 hours. Penned up and helped Rob Churchill (vet) stitch up Tisha – cut her leg horribly on barb wire after getting frightened by thunder.

Mon 12/11/84 Shearing. 570 hogget ewes. Drenched and branded. 686 ewe hoggets.

Tue 13/11/84 Dipped ewe hoggets. Drenched and branded ewes and lambs off shears. 291 ewe hoggets. 166 4 tooth ewes and xb lambs.

Wed 14/11/84 Shearing. 577 crutched wether hoggets. 286 uncrutched wether hoggets.

Thur 15/11/84 Shearing. 275 dry ewes. 95 ewes 87 lambs.

Fri 16/11/84 Shearing. 870 mixed age wethers.

Sat 17/11/84 Dipped drove to Braidwood and picked up Nelly.

Tue 21/11/84 Shearing. 317 5,6,7 yr old ewes. Cobber cut his foot badly on the back wheel of the ag bike. Took him to the vet. Stitches, anaesthetic and Amoxil $39.10
