Second Batch of Photos Available

For anyone interested, the color batch of the photos from the Glencoe Mill Village are now available. There are 18 of them. I say it in there, but I'll say it here, too. The photos that were taken of the <i>inside</i> of the mill were taken by pushing my head and my camera into a small hole in the wall of the mill. It was the only way in. What I saw took my breath away, so I wanted to photograph it. Unfortunetly, they are not the best quality shots. But they show a lot. Enjoy!

I Accidently Went to SC and all I Got was This Lottery Ticket and Some Grass

<a href="http://www.audlink.com/mailbox/1320/0404031729.mp3";>Click here</a> for a voice entry.

Yeah, so if you heard the second of my two voice entries made today (man, that first one's quality was horrible, wasn't it? What a waste!), you know that somehow I ended up in North Bumblefuck, South Carolina.

Oh, yeah, I found out that I actually landed myself in Wallace, SC. Went in as far as Cheraw, then turned around and headed back toward civilitazion.

I really don't know how the hell that happened. When I go out on these little photography jaunts, I like to pick a major highway and ride it until an exit catches my attention. In there is usually a smaller highway, which is what I am aiming for. It's the little country back roads that tend to have what I want to photograph. Sometimes it works out real well. And sometimes it bombs big time.

The tourist board for NC has a slogan to get NC residents to tour the state, which is, "Discover the state you're in." Today, my slogan was "Discover the state you're in...then drive clear out of it!"

I hit I-40 and decided pretty fast that today's destination would be Sanford, NC, which actually isn't <i>too</i> far from Raleigh. I drove around Sanford for a good while, ended up on back roads with nothing noteworthy, and then on a road that pretty much just stopped. Went into a parking lot to turn around, realized I'd just turned into the home base of the local Jahova Witnesses, and burned some serious rubber right out of Sanford.

Kept going down I-64, which eventually turned into Route 1. I start seeing signs for several areas I actually knew: Southern Pines, Pinehurst, Aberdeen, etc. Of course, these aren't exactly places ripe with the sort of thing I like to photograph, so I decided to keep going even further.

I come to a split in the road. My choices are to stay on Route 1 and ride it to where ever. Or take 177 into a town called Hamlet. Now, exactly how does one resist visiting a town called Hamlet?! The only way you could have attracted my attention away from Hamlet was to tell me that on the other side there was a town called Buttmonkeywithadrumsetville, NC and/or it was a town completely populated by single firemen who like fat chicks.

So it was off to Hamlet.

I arrive in Hamlet to discover it was not a small, middle of nowhere town, like I was hoping for. It was actually pretty busy and hopping. So I decided to pass through and head down 177 to see what I could find. High populated and busy areas are not real good for what I like to photograph. And it ups my odds of meeting the local police.

Maybe somewhere along the line I should have made a note of some weird changes in my surroundings. It all seems so obvious now.

Shortly after leaving Hamlet, I hit a patch of road that was...not in the best condition. It was paved, but it was rough. And the areas where the lines were was not the same, and that patch of ground was lower. It was very odd, to say the least. Then, the arrows in the turning lanes got a lot smaller and a bit pudgy compaired to the arrows I am used to. And there were no other cars on this road.

Glancing up, I see the <i>scariest</i> sign known to man when you are just on a road trip for a few hours...."Welcome to South Carolina." Nice, white sign, the writing was a nice elegant script. But it still made me scream like Count Dracula was riding a motorcycle and chasing me down this lonely road. Had anyone else actually been <i>on</i> this road, they probably would have thought the invisible man was in my car and currently attempting to murder me, but my struggle was being cut down by a desire to not slam my car into a tree. Or several trees.

That scream lasted a good five minutes, and I don't think I inhaled once. I could feel the panic attacks setting in.

How was I to know I had gotten anywhere <i>near</i> South Carolina?! It was my understanding that it was hours away, and I thought Pinehurst was still a good way away from SC. I had passed Walmarts I serviced ATMs in! How did I get into SC?!

I finally get my wits about me enough to drive my car up on to the side of the road and park on the grass shoulder. I get out and walk to the front of the car where I use my cell phone to call my mom while doing leg stretches.

"Hey, ma, guess where I am?"
"Where?"
"South Carolina!"
"Oh...so I guess you won't be home for dinner, huh?"
"No. Not thinking I'll make it home in time."

I explained the situation to my mom, and I'm sure she and dad had a nice laugh about it later. I know when I finally strolled in the front door at 8:30, they were amazed to see me, figuring I would have gotten a room in a hotel or something and headed back the next day.

And normally, I would have. But I was in <i>Wallace, SC!</i> You know what's in Wallace, SC? <i>NOTHING!</i>

All though I must say...Cheraw was rather nice. I may go back there. Of course, I'd rather wait until I have a concealed carry license and can bring my gun, but hey! Cheraw was nice, it was everything around it that sort of bothered me.

So here I go driving through Cheraw when Randy gives me a call to tell me he passed his qualifying today in Charlotte. I decide, hey, Randy's from somewhere around NC, and he pretty much knows where everything is! And, shit, he has friends and family here in SC somewhere!

"Randy, how the hell do I get back to Raleigh from Cheraw, SC?"
"Where?!"
"Cheraw, SC."
"Where the hell is that?"
"South Carolina, obviously! Can't tell you much more than that!"

I <i>know</i> he got a good laugh about that. And come Tuesday, I should get a good ribbing at work from my co-workers about it, too!

So I finally turn around. Now, I know where I am going. I memorized the road where I was going so I could turn back. And I tossed some rocks out the window to follow. Ok, not really.

Decided to make the best of it. Stopped at a gas station and filled the tank, got some soda, a bag of pretzels, and a lottery ticket. Hey, you never know.

Surprisingly, Cheraw, SC isn't that far from Raleigh. Ok, it is, it's about 100 miles or so. But it's closer than Wilmington, NC! And I got home in an hour and a half.

I didn't get many pictures on my trip out today. Once I passed the border, pictures really didn't matter much anymore. I was in unexplored territory, and almost considered making the trip to Columbia, because at least there I could visit the main base of ETS and maybe someone could give me directions <i>home! </i>

I did, on the way back, stop in Wallace again and take a few pictures. Not really with the intentions of art, but more along the lines of, "No one is going to fucking believe I <i>accidently</i> went to South Carolina! And I need to take these pictures as a memory of how fucking stupid I can be!"

Anyway...home now. Legs are cramped, I peed like a race horse when I got home, and I am planning another jaunt for tomorrow. Today wasn't very productive. So I'm taking another approach to this tomorrow.

I'll let you know if it lands me in Tenessee.

Tearing CVS a New One

So, yes, I just tore CVS a new one. They deserve it. I am really starting to think this photo thing is a scam, and I told them that. Not only at the actual store, but I just contacted their corporate office, as well. Made sure to enter the store number and address, too.

As you know, yesterday I brought those three rolls of film in to be developed. I picked them up later that evening on the way home from dinner with the folks, but didn't check them until we were home because my parents had a small argument in the car and dad was now trying to kill us with it, so I was holding on for dear life.

I pull out the photos to have a look and notice that they, once again, did not print all the photos that showed up on the negatives. The first time they did it, I let it go, thinking it was a mistake, and let Wolf Camera reprint them for me. But this time around, it was smelling fishy.

So I walk in to CVS today with the three packages of photos. I put them on the counter and explained the issue. The girl was very understanding, wrote the issue down on each package, and wrote down the numbers of the photos that were not printed. After a moment of adoring one of my photos of a flower, she took the packages back and I went on my way.

Went out on another photo taking jaunt, but managed to get on a road that was just too busy for me to pull over and take photos, so none were taken.

On my way back, the CVS girl calls to tell me my pictures are ready to be picked up. I thank her and tell her I'll be there in about an hour.

I go in, the girl hands me the packages and asks me to check and make sure they got them all right. One package at a time. After the last one I tell her all is well, and put my hand out for the other packages.

This is where she hands me a bill for $20.

Ok, so am I wrong, or is there something a little fishy about this scene? They fucked up and only printed about half of each roll, then charged me $20 because printing the photos they forgot was considered a reprint? Where in this does "re" come in at all? I had to get three rolls of film run through their machine twice because they didn't do it right the first time, but I get charged to fix their mistake? No, I'm sorry, that doesn't ring right with me.

So I told her again what the situation was, and she smiled fake at me. Then told me I couldn't have my pictures - half of which I paid for yesterday - back until I paid the $20.

Let me speak to a manager. None are available? My ass!

So I came home and wrote their corporate office. Tomorrow, I call. The next day, I call. The day after that, I call. I call and email until I get $20. And maybe some coupons or something.

This, my friends, is where I become the queen of evil customers. I give it a week before I stand out in front of the place with a sign telling everyone going in about the situation at hand.

I know it's "only" $20, but the fact is 1. I paid twice to get the film developed because they fucked up and 2. that's a little over 2 hours of stuffing ATM canisters. So I'm ticked off.

BTW, I didn't have them put on disc. I wanted to, but it seems this is some big elaborate thing that means sending them off to a far off land. And I wasn't about to that, seeing as it would probably need to be sent off twice, and paid for twice. So I'll let you know as I scan them when they are up for viewing.

Glencoe

Ok, the first set of photos from last weekend is up. This is the first set I have ever done with black and white photos.

This is the Glencoe Mill Village in Burlington, NC. I've mentioned it before, an ex-boss of mine lives there and we visited about a year ago.

http://public.fotki.com/Scars19/attempts_at_photography/burlington_nc_glenc/

Enjoy!

Me and Mom Hit the Long Road

Mom actually came with me today when I went to take pictures! Yay! And we had a lot of fun, too.

It was <i>very</i> productive. I actually went through two and a half rolls of film, one of which was black and white. I'm very proud!

We tried to stop by the battle field in Alamance, but for whatever reason, it's only open 9-5 Mon. through Fri. Why?! It's only open when everyone is at work? Can <i>someone</i> tell me what sense this makes?!

So we went back down the road and stopped at a small museum, which was also closed. But there was some interesting stuff on the grounds, plus the museum itself was an old house. So I took some pictures of the slave quarters, the old barn, and the house, as well as attempting some close up shots of some of the flowers.

From there we hit the Glenco Mill Village. I was there the first Christmas I was here, and that's the village an ex-boss of mine lives in. But I now have an entire roll and a half of this place. LOL! It was really a gold mine of great photos. No out-houses, unfortunetly. I didn't feel like crawling into people's backyards. LOL!

I do, however, have another building-less chimney to give you. LOL! Extreme close up with all the grit.

But we got photos of the mill itself, including inside! One of the mill buildings had a rather large hole in the side of it, just large enough to stick my head in, so I did. Then I managed to get my arms and a camera in there, so here's hoping that flash did it's job. If it didn't, I'm going back for it. I've decided to get a back up camera for indoor shots if those shots fail. Like I said, my flash isn't that great and usually indoor photos don't turn out.

But just jamming my head in that hole blew my mind. I wasn't expecting to see what I did. Sure, it was a pit of filth. But some of the old mill equipment was still there, like belts on the ceiling and some other stuff I had trouble making out (it was really dark).

Anyway, once I spend that last roll of film completely, I'll get those shots developed. I won't be posting <i>all</i> of them online. Let's face it...there's 60 pictures from today. It's too much scanning (unless I decide to just get the shit put on disc, which I may).

I'm going to lug the camera along tomorrow. I'm going to the range with Dana, and I want to see, if it's not too crowded, if they will let me take pictures in the range. Maybe I'll actually have a photo of Dana to share with you. You've heard his voice, so why not. LOL! I'd like to get some photos of my co-workers anyway. It's tough to do since I never see most of them unless we're at work, and I can't take pictures there. But I'll try.

I Drove Through "Deliverance"

I went on another adventure. LOL! Ok, it had a purpose, it always does, unfortunetly both of those purposes failed.

<b>The main one:</b> go to the uniform shop in Goldsboro. Everyone at work is raving about it, and I could use some pants and something to hold my badge, since I'm sick to death of trying to force it through my shirt. But they - for <i>some</i> reason - close at 3:00 on Saturday. I got there at 3:30. And in front of the place were at least 6 people staring at the door in complete shock. It's amazing. Like the one guy said, anyone who actually wears a uniform doesn't have time to get there during the week. But hey, it's their business, not mine.

<b>The second reason:</b> take pictures. I did find butt loads of stuff to take pictures of, and some of them would have been cool shots (like the horse on the front lawn of the run down trailer) but I couldn't pull to the side of the road to do so safely. I always ended up with some tractor trailer speeding behind me or some such nonsense. I got a chance once, and went to take it...but someone stepped out of the rickety old house I was about to photograph. I was sure no one lived there because part of one of the walls was coming down. But sure enough, out came some guy with no shoes on, wearing his underwear.

I ended up heading for Mt. Olive. I was only a short distance away, and figured maybe I'd have a chance. But when I got there, I ended up driving straight through and ended up in Calypso. Calypso, by the way, is right in the center of east Buttfuckville. I honestly believe the population there is about three people and 90 billion open fields, with twice as many falling down buildings (I am sure no one lived in because most had their roof about 4 feet from the group). So I turned around and headed back for Mt. Olive. Only I took another road that stated I could get there. Which worked out ok...it landed me at the only Bank of America in Mt. Olive. So I figure I'm home free now. I still should have gone back to the road I was on originally and bypassed Mt. Olive again.

Make my way to a main road, and head towards the arrows pointing to Goldsboro. If I could just get back to Goldsboro, I could hit I-70 and get straight home. No problem!

But the arrows suddenly ended. The last one pointed into someone's driveway. So I went straight figuring I'd eventually find it.

What I found was I-55. Which was also ok. I-55 would eventually get me home, and better yet, it would pretty much drop me off up the road from my house. So I took it.

Somewhere around Newtons Grove I hit what must be the biggest failure in engineering ever to be laid down in reality. It was a circle like thing with about nine roads shooting off of it, with several more shooting off of them. And not one sign was posted. It was a gamble. I picked a road and took it. Unfortunetly, it wasn't I-55 anymore. Now it was 701. 701 is another one of these roads that takes you through several scenes of Deliverance.

Again, lots of great things to photograph, nowhere to stop. It was all ditches up the side. I decided to try taking them from my car. It was still a no go because of the traffic. And at this point it was 4:30. My parents had wanted to go out at 5:30 for dinner. And I knew Mt. Olive was about 1 1/2 hours from home, roughly. But god only knows how far Newtons Grove is, and how long it would take me to ride 701 to somewhere I could identify.

Somewhere along the line I saw a sign from heaven. A large one. And it said, "I-95." I almost threw myself out of my car trying to get to it! Got on, made it to the exit for I-70 somehow, and got on that. From there it was a straight run home.

<b>Total hours out today:</b> 6
<b>Total photos taken:</b> 3
<b>Total photos taken that I figure will turn out and/or be of any use:</b> 1 (but it was the roll tester, so it may not)
<b>Total uniform supplies bought:</b>
<b>Total shots I could have taken but didn't get a chance:</b> 35

Will I try again? You can bet your ass! LOL! Next time, though, I'll have to head out around 9:00 or 10:00 to give myself time to scope out areas. Fun fun.

<b>Future places to hit with <i>only</i> photography in mind:</b> New Bern, Wilmington, Williamsburg, Va., Calypso, Goldsboro, Greensboro, Eden, Reidsville, Henderson, and more will be added later. Hopefully this gets done between now and the end of the summer.

They're Here!

The photos from the drive-in are up! At least the ones I have. Go to my photo album, click on Attempts at photography, and the theater, chimney, and snow should be there in their own respective albums. Enjoy!

Update on the Drive-In Photos

Well, I got the film back from my trip to the drive in. The pictures didn't come out as good as I thought they would. And on top of that, it seems about half the film never got back to me. I have the negatives, and they're perfect. But for whatever reason, they were never developed. So on Saturday they go back with a request to actually develop <i>all</i> of the pictures.

I'm going to scan them anyway. They aren't bad, but some were a little dark. Oh well. I'm going to try some things like making them B&W. And I'm going to invest in some B&W film. Anyone out there able to recommend some good film, both B&W and color?

The Drive-In and the Chimney

I got off my lazy ass and went out with my camera for the afternoon. And once I get the time to develop the film - and I am hoping the pictures turn out well - I'll have some for you.

It was only about an hour away. LOL! I never realized how far Henderson is from here. Guess it never registered at work. But it took a good hour to get out there. It was worth it, though. I only spent about ten minutes at the first spot, which was my main reason for going. But still, very worth it. And I only broke a <i>few</i> laws. LOL!

My main stop was an old drive-in movie theater. I don't know how long the theater has been closed down. According to their board, it may not have been that long ago. But I have no clue. I just looked up one of the films listed on the broken down board, and it appears to have been released early last month! LOL! However, the theater is in such disrepair there is no way the damage occured in less than a month, and the weeds growing around are too large for it to have been open in the past year. So the falling down board may possibly be advertising some other theater's movies. Why, I don't know. The board itself looks like it would come down in a strong wind. So either it's for another theater in the area, or there are letters missing, like on the other side. I don't know. All I know is this theater is in really bad shape and couldn't have been working a month ago (I also pass it weekly and it's never being worked on or anything).

Anyway. My original intent was to photograph the side of the screen visiable from the street, the ticket counter, and the advertising board.

<b>This Just In...</b> Oh shit, that theater isn't abandoned! LOL! I just got really, really curious, so I looked it up. It's listed in business directories. I don't know <i>how</i> it is functioning, but it appears that it is. I don't get it. There is a big chunk missing from the screen! I had a feeling that the theater could possibly still be used at one point, because of the ticket booth. But once I went back behind and into where you would park your car, I saw that screen and thought there was no way. I guess it's possible that it <i>is</i> closed down and just hasn't been closed down for that long. But who knows. All I know is that if it's still functional then I broke more laws than I had originally thought. The one movie that I remember the name of that was listed on that board was released 12/5/03. I doubt that almost two months later they would be showing the same movie. I don't know. But it seems strange to me. I'm almost tempted to call the phone number. Either way, you'll see the photos. LOL!

Ok, I couldn't stand it, so I called the number. They're open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8:00, and on Sunday every admission gets a half off coupon for their next visit. Friday night is a double feature of Honey and Love Don't Cost a Thing. However, that half off probably only means half the screen is off. LOL! You'll see when I get the pictures. And just to be sure, I need to try and remind myself to ask the people at the bank there if they know anything about the theater. They live in the town, they would probably know if the theater was still functioning or if it closed down recently.

If it's still functional, that's fine. My original plan in this project wasn't just abandoned buildings, but old buildings in general. I was taking note of some places with real classic designs that were, in fact, being used for business or whatever. I just want to photograph these older buildings and ones with classic designs because I really like the artistic nature of the buildings themselves, plus the thought of everything they've seen over the years. It's history, I guess. I'm just a bit miffed about the theater because had I known it was still functional, I would have called and gotten permission to photograph the grounds first. Which is what I plan on doing with the other functional buildings I want to photograph. It just seems right, and you really <i>should</i> get permission before photographing other people's property.

Ok, so with that lovely information, I was playing horrible tresspasser today. LOL! As I was saying above, I had originally gone just to photograph the back end of the theater that is visible from the street. But I ended up jumping a few things to get into the back to take pictures of the screen. It was really neat, actually. According to this website I found, the place was opened up in 1949. I don't think it's been repaired at all since, which is why I thought it was abandoned. It really could use a paint job, some nails and plaster work, and some new paving on the grounds out front. Not to mention a good cleaning of all the crap piled up along the sides.

Well, my second stop I <i>know</i> was abandoned. I originally wasn't going to stop at all at this second one, but I couldn't resist. It's a hill with a cleared out "field." Only, right in the middle of it is a chimney. No house, just a chimney. Of course, on closer inspection there are clear cut trees down all around it. I made a judgement call there, and took pictures from probably about 25 feet away. It just didn't look safe enough to go trudging up through all these tree trunks and whatever else just to photograph a chimney. But the camera has zoom. LOL!

There's a few more places I want to stop and photograph at some point, too, but it was getting late and the sun was starting to go down, so I decided to leave it be. I <i>was</i> about an hour or so away from home and the folks wanted to go out to dinner.

I did attempt to go in and photograph a run down, burnt out trailer park. It caught my attention. Unfortunetly, it's right off the highway, so it required that I actually pull my car in. I did...part of the way. Until I realized there was no possible area for me to turn around without blowing a tire or something. The roadway was way too narrow, and once through that, the trailers were too close to the road. They had obviously either been moved or slid. So there I was backing my car out of this narrow roadway, trying to keep straight, because if I turned even slightly I would have slid backwards into a ditch on either side that was way to far down to drive the car back out of. I did make it out unscathed, though.

When the weather gets nicer, I plan on parking the car down the road here and walking a bit. I found an abandonded farm, and it <i>is</i> abandoned. No doubt about it. I just hope it survives for me to do this. They are doing construction in the area, and while it is a little bit down the road, it's still close enough that it could be in demolishing plans of the very near future. I had to pass up some barns and all that I would have loved to photograph, but they were in the middle of cow pastures with wire fences. So I just swallowed it and didn't go there.

It was an interesting day, to say the least. The theater was a rush. Although now I'm not so happy about it since it appears it may actually still be functional. I <i>still</i> don't understand how, though. The screen <i>was</i> badly damaged, and the weeds where you park the cars seemed to be overrun. And the website says it is functional year round...

<img src="http://mywebpages.comcast.net/driveins/nc-henderson-raleighroad-2.jpg";>

That's a picture of the grounds from the website I found. This is <i>not</i> what I saw. The grass and weeds would easily have come up to the windows of a car. Unless I was seeing things. I was hurrying around. Guess I'll check again when I get the pictures back. But the screen damage was not me seeing things, I know that. Just wish I had known so I could have contacted someone about photographing the grounds first. I sort of feel bad. Am highly doubting that anyone called the cops on me or anything. A lot of people saw at least my car by the entrance. But I was out there long enough, and along that roadside long enough, that I would have been stopped at some point by one of the 8 billion state troopers I saw today, I figure. However, I did spend most of that time in front of the place, I was only on the actually secured area of the grounds for maybe a minute, tops. Ah, whatever. LOL!

At Least I'm Not the Only One

Ok, making a second entry about the drive-in! LOL! Ok, I hit drive-ins.com to get more info. This theater is still operational, however, I am not the only one who thought it was dead.

<blockquote>In spite of previous comments, it certainly does NOT look condemned, it simply looks like an old Drive-In. In fact, it's rather nice to see a Theater like this, with color & design, as opposed to some of the drab Billboard Screens and Generic "Marquee" (little more than a piece of plywood at times). Hi Beth!
Rick Hasley November 30, 2002</blockquote>

It's true, the thing is rather pleasing to the eye, despite the fact that, yes, it <i>does</i> look condemned. It's very 50s-ish, and you can tell at a glance that is when it opened for business. But it also doesn't look like anyone has been taking that much care of it since it opened.

<blockquote>Visited this drive-in last night and it was a fun experience. The 2 kids well, almost kids (16 and 18) had never been to a drive-in and seemed fascinated. Not the best drive-in around but the closest to us. Admission and food is very cheap but as stated before they need to fix the screens damage. All in all not too bad. Will check out some different theaters around me since I found this wonderful site and will probably be back to this one again soon.
T Walker August 18, 2002</blockquote>

Not sure what she paid for admission, but it was listed as $10 a pop today. You can go to an indoor theater for half the price. Although, in all honesty, I'd pay just to support something like this because it's a neat part of history. It would, however, be nice if they fixed the joint up a bit.

<blockquote>My family and I attended the Raleigh Outdoor Theatre on 6/22/02. Small ozoner open weekends only. Wouldn't know the theatre was open from the highway if it wasn't for the box office being open which is about 150 feet from the road. No lights on the marquee, entry way or screen tower. Has a large screen tower that is in pretty bad shape. Has two major tears on the screen but in the most part aren't apparent during the movie since the movie picture only shows on about 60% of the screen. Raleigh Road has a small snack bar with great prices and decent food. However due to only one person working, the service is slow. Uses FM sound and the picture quality is decent especially considering the screen's relatively poor condition. Will go back due to low prices. Appreciate the owner keeping the Raleigh Road open but they need to repair the screen tower.

Those "two major tears" have become a hole. If the film only shows on 60% of the screen, I can understand then how they get around the hole. But this guy is right...if this thing is still functional, they should fix it. Even if it's just painting a big piece of plywood white and slapping it over the hole, it's <i>something.</i>

Guess it's been like this for a while. And it's getting worse. This person added photos to the site, from 1997 I guess. It looks a lot better in those photos then what I saw today.

It's ashame really. Drive-ins are neat, and the one time I went to one it was a lot of fun. I wish there was a way for people to take better care of them so they don't close due to being dangerous.
