| | Dundee Montessori's Journals Recent Comments Dear Parents, These photos are for your children as much as for you. Children love to sit and see their friends at work. Use the slide show function and let your child view the albums. The photos may jolt a memory for your child and you may learn more about their day.
Miss Carolyn Why we ask parents to say, "good bye" at the door.
Montessori education stresses teaching independence so that the child is able to care for his clothes, classroom, and work by himself. As you know, our routine starts the moment a child enters the door. A child politely says his good bye and then puts his lunch on the shelf. Then a child must think to hold the railing, sit and remove shoes, find slippers and put them on, take off a coat, lay it on the table, get a hanger and hang it up, and then use the bathroom before choosing a first work. All this before the day begins! Of course, a parent may come into the classroom at any time. Yet, unknowingly, parents sometime begin to do the shoes, hang up the child's coat...you get the picture. And some days maybe your child might need that gentle help from the parent to get into the swing of it. But, mainly, we expect your child to learn this simple routine by themselves. It really jump starts their minds for bigger things to come. Of course, teachers will help as needed, but we do let children practice until their hands learn these steps. Boy, are they proud then! And that is the whole purpose of saying good bye at the door.
