Fotki Global Update
Lots of Great Changes Have Been Done Recently!
Welcome to the updated Fotki having new look and feel, and many cool and convenient features added!
- A default text inviting your visitors to enjoy viewing albums, to add comments and sign a guest book was put on the "Welcome" page:
You can replace this text with whatever you want, even with a cool web page because html is allowed in this section. To edit your greeting, go to the "Settings" section of your "My Account" page. - "Links" section new engine provides easy and convenient managing links. They are extremely simply to add using a bookmarklet:
and it is possible to mark them with any number of tags:
Also, link search by tags is in effect to enable you to instantly find the sites of interest, for example by the tag 'photos':
- Long-waited RSS news feed has appeared in the Photo Albums' "What's New" section:
No more need browsing your Fotki Friends pages to find if there are new albums or photos added. Just subscribe to the feed from the pages you want to get updates on and they will be coming to you in due time. - Photo Album's "Comments" section has completely new look and feel:
A re-designed page is supplied with new avatars for guests and anonymous posting comments to photos. - Your ample and detailed address book shows only those fields that are filled in and hides the empty ones:

- The Tree shows all sorts of album and folder states:

- All the times and dates appearing on your Fotki pages (time when comments to photos and blog entries, and new guest-book messages were added, etc) are formatted in accordance with the time zone defined in the "General" subsection of the "Settings" section of your "My Account" page.
- The restriction on folder description size was removed and now you can place even a whole story in that field.
- A photo album has got a header displaying album's title, description, globe icon - if photo-session location was indicated for this album - and three tabs.
- Album navigation is handy. In the thumbnail view, each album's page has "Thumbnails", "Album Comments" and "Slide Show" tabs on the top and bottom of the viewing window:
In the full-size photo view, the same tabs are on the top of the viewing window:
- Album's "Date taken" style is format-neutral. For your convenience, there are tree fields with drop downs for the date items in the "Album Properties" form:

- The problem of album icons' appearance is solved. Now photos' empty parts and borders on the icon are purely white and look fine with any custom color scheme:

- Albums set as hidden in listing are marked with an eye icon:

- The new "Album Comments" page makes it possible reading all comments to the album's photos right in the album:

- The "Add Your Comment" form allows a viewer to post comments: as a Fotki Member, as a guest or anonymously - without having to logout. The direct link to the Login page provides the ability to add a comment under another Fotki UserName:

- In the "Photo Properties" form, photo's preview has been enlarged for you to conveniently view it in all details (see the screenshot below).
- A few days ago, the first version of Flash-based slideshow has been released; and since that time bugs found due to our testing and the feedback from our users were fixed and an option to control slideshow with keyboard arrows was added.
- New Java-based uploader version 3.0 is on beta stage now. The uploader was considerably optimized to allow uploading of even more photos.
- Support for the latest EXIF 2.2 format has been added.
- "Album Properties" form has been completely updated and became user-friendlier.
- In the "Advanced Properties" section of the "Album Properties" form, photo frame styles are possible to preview in the scroll bar when choosing frames:

- In the "Advanced Properties" section of the "Album Properties" form, an Album layout option enables to have up to ten thumbnail columns on the page:

- A cool feature, album photo-session location, makes creating and viewing albums more exciting!
Now when viewing albums it is possible to find the spot indicating to where photos were taken on a variety of web maps: Google Earth, MSN Virtual Earth, Mapquest, World Wind, and Google Maps. - For an album, mean geographic coordinates (longitude and altitude), indicating a locality where all of this album's photos were taken, and its altitude above the
sea level, are added manually in the "Photo-session location" section of the "Album Properties" form:

- For a photo, precise geographic coordinates indicating an exact place where this photo was taken, can be added either automatically or manually, through the "Photo Properties" form:
In case your digital camera has a build-in GPS receiver or is connected to an external GPS device, the GPS info of the uploaded photo will be automatically read and added to its properties. - To better deal with a new feature, two options have been added to the "General" subsection of the "Settings" section of "My Account" page: "Distance units" and
"Map coordinate notation":
Currently, distance units are used for indicating the altitude above the sea level, but in a rather near future they will be involved into the Fotki geographical search. We accept geographical coordinates in a majority of their formats; and "Map coordinate notation" preference gives you an ability to choose one for their presentation in the album. Analogously, altitude can be given either in metric or in US customary units. - And, the last but not least, a lot of bug fixes were done.
NB! Because of the recent numerous changes, Fotki co-branding could be somehow affected. In case you experience any problems with your co-branded pages, please contact Fotki Customer Service for detailed instructions.
We sincerely thank all the members of Fotki Community. For us, your extremely valuable feedback is a creative impact to developing new and new Fotki features. As usual, we'd like to get some extra eyes on the newest version of Fotki; and your feedback on any detail is welcome. If any bugs were introduced with this global update, please let us know and we'll fix them ASAP.
Yours,
Fotki Team

wrote: Thursday, May 11, 2006 9:08 AM Good idea, Snowbeam! We are adding a bunch of new frames currently and will appreciate new frame designs from Fotki users.
You may create your own frames and add their pictures to your albums. Please, place their links here so that we could easily find them.
Our designers will make new frames according to our users' ideas.

Great addition to the set of frames so far. For new recommendations from users, what format do you want them in? A total image of a frame? On broken up into parts? Just a description of a frame?
Thank you,

As for your questions:
1. Broken up into parts? Good question! If possible, please send us a layered PSD file.
2. A total image of a frame? Yes, first of all a sketch of the frame or its screenshot representing the general view of the frame is needed. It can be of any size.
3. Just a description of a frame? No, it's too theoretical: Before submitting please make sure (a) your frame borders equally well a photo of any size - from 250 x 250 pixels to 800 x 800 pixels; (b) your frame is equally well seen on both white and black background; (c) your frame's outer edge is transparent.
We welcome any kind of frames: photographic and realistic ones, or just abstract or ornamental borders - any beautiful colorful borders composed from lines, dots, etc.

wrote: Wednesday, March 15, 2006 8:21 AM Not sure where to post comments about usability, so I'll do it here. Overall, everything in Fotki is pretty good, but the handling of "My Friends" and "Sharing" functions really could use some major usability rework. eg: trying to find a particular friend in an unsorted list more than a few screens long is very cumbersome and time consuming. Also, when adding a new friend, they seem to get placed in the list in a random way... doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. Seems to me that if the list isn't going to be sorted, then at least new additions would always be added to the end of the list. I'd really prefer to have the list sorted alphabetically though... and one continuous list rather than spanning several "pages".

wrote: Monday, January 30, 2006 1:53 PM First I would like to say that I love the new look. My question is...I signed out of my account and now every time I go to my fotki page I have to keep logging in. How does one go about having fotki remember me like it did before? I might miss this so if you could send your suggestions to my fotki email account...I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Lisa

I have tried to Geo tag my albums but I must be doing it wrong. I have tagged a few places and added them but they don't show up as tagged. Also, I haven't got a clue where to get the map coordinates from. Can somebody help, please?Badgley
