Transitioning is when you decide that you no longer want to continue relaxing or chemically altering your hair's natural texture. So rather than relaxing the new growth you began allowing it to grow out will using protective styles that are low maintenance and call for little to no combing or manipulation. For many the decision to go natural took a lot of contemplating and weighing the options while for others relaxers just wasn’t our friends : ( so the decision was simple, and going natural was the best option!!
I think that the transitioning phase is the most important stage of become natural, being that it allows you to learn more about your have and its natural texture, it also allows you to want to know more about was has and hasn’t worked for others, and the lessons, tips and support that you gain from others becomes priceless. Its also the most difficult phase being that it can be very frustrating and heart breaking for many esp. with the breakage that may occur while learning to deal with the two textures. During this phase some become very unsure of them selves and question whether to give up or follow through with the decision. But once you get over your old way of thinking and get out of that mind frame by continuing to open your self up to be natural and most importantly stop worrying what everyone else thinks about you. You slowly but surely are set free and the transitioning phase becomes easier!
According to Nappurality there are 2 schools of thought:
School 1. Cut the relaxed hair off right away
No doubt, the quickest and easiest way to go from relaxed to napptural hair is to simply cut the relaxed hair off. This is referred to as THE BIG CHOP. Depending on how much napptural hair you have, this could mean you shave your head or cut your hair down to a twa (teeny weeny afro). This is the transition method of choice for many because it gives the person the opportunity to learn about their hair as it grows. Plus it looks great!
School 2. Gradually grow your hair out
This option means you keep your relaxed hair while you grow the napptural hair out. This method requires much more work, (depending on how long you keep the relaxed hair) unless you transition with a covering style such as weaving, wigs or braids.
Nappurality.com also has a transitioning test if you would like to find out which school is best for you
