baking soda shampoo

Just add the ingredient to an old shampoo bottle shake well and the baking soda will dissolve in the warm water so don't worry about it being gritty. What I do is I pour half of it over my hair and massage my scalp clean and then I rinse. Then I take the rest and do it agian making sure to work it in my hair so it will remove an twist and loc gel that may be left behind.

I was at another hair forum and found a link to a young lady on youtube who does videos on how she cares for her hair (NajahFace) While there I found doesn't use shampoos that have sulfates(a lathering agent) because the sulfate drys out African American hair. The 3:50 mark is where she mentions the sulfate in shampoos.

Thanks for sharing this. I'll have to check it out. Sistaslick also wrote about staying away from shampoos with SLS in her journals

2 TBSP unsalted butter
2 TBSP purified water
Juice and pulp of medium sizeed grapefruit

Combine all ingeddients in electric blender. Refrigerate overnight. Part hair into sections, and apply mixture one section at a time. Massge into scalp for about 5 minutes. Rinse out. If hair is very dry, wrap with clear plastic, cover with 2 shower caps and leave on overnight.

Another good protein conditioner is...

5 tbs. plain yogurt
1 egg white

I use this when I don't have the money to get the protein packs that they sell at salley's. It works just as good as any other protein conditioner plus it's cheap. You pretty much already have eggs at home and the yogurt only cost 57 cents at Wal*Mart.

Cake Batter Butter (nice sub for Healthy Hair Butter - been tested!)
1/3 cup distilled water
1 teaspoon olive butter
2 tablespoons cocoa butter
2 tablespoons shea butter
5 teaspoons emulsifying wax
5 drops rosemary eo
7 drops lemongrass eo
15 drops coconut fragrance oil
3 drops ylang ylang eo

Put the oils/butters and beeswax in a bowl - melt in microwave for about a minute.
Stir to thoroughly mix.
Start mixing with mixer and slowly pour in the water as mixing. (not all at once!)
(the water and oil will be slighly separated at this point)
Put in refrigerator for 10 minutes.
Mix again with mixer.
Add essential oils and mix once more.
This will make about 6 oz of very thick hair butter that is not too greasy. It smells very herby like HHB and acts the same way.

I would guess you could substitute the oils and butters for whatever you have on hand and you could probably substitute the emulsifying wax with beeswax. And of course, you can scent any way you want.

Ginger Lemon Ice Pomade (similar to Mimosa Hair Honey)
2 tablespoons olive butter
2 tablespoons Proclaim 7 Oil
1.5 tablespoons Grapeseed Oil
.5 tablespoon shea butter
.5 tablespoon emulsifying wax
¾ dropperfull of Ginger Essence Oil
a few drops of Rosemary Growth Blend
3-5 drops of Lemongrass EO

Melt all of the butters/oils in the microwave for about 45 seconds.
Stir to thoroughly blend.
Add essential and fragrance oils.
Stir.
Put in container and the in refrigerator for about 20-30 minutes to cool to the right consistency.
This smells SO good. Kind of lemony and gingery. If you like the perfume Ginger Essense from Origins, you'll love this smell. I got the Ginger Essence Fragrance Oil from Camden-Grey.

I will be working on a replica for the Hair Milk soon.

i really like her post

I'm braided up for the summer at long last. I used the method shown on www.growafrohairlong.com to braid my own hair. Yes, you heard right, I did it myself!! The method listed there is really simple and straightforward I cant believe I waited this long to learn. I'm a DIY'er by heart and I am thrilled everytime I learn something new and can pass it on or encourage others to do the same.
Also in this album are different styles that I wear from day to day. I love to experiment and play with my braids. You would be surprised at how versatile these cheap individual braids are.

***Maintaining the Look***
1. Moisturize everyday - Just because my hair is braided up doesn't mean I should slunk on the moisture. It Is Summer!!!
2. Spray Leave-In on ends once per week.
3. Cover hair with satin scarf to prevent frizzies after moisturizing.
4. Oil Sheen is a must. These braids begin to look really old and tired really quickly but oil sheen breathes life back into them.
