Nappiversary!

June 2008

It's June! My Nappiversary month! I am so excited to have made it through my first year as a complete natural! I have not missed the perm not once!
My first day back at work in August 2007 was a shocker to most of my co-workers. They had no idea that I was going to go natural.

Rule #1: Don't tell anyone about your plans to go natural as they will try to talk you out of it or question what you know is best for you!

When I walked in with my twa: I saw jaws dropping! I got questions and comments but most were complimentary and said how good it looked on me. Now I don't know or even care what they may have really thought!

I did have a random a$$ to jokingly say that I needed a perm but as I looked at his raggedy hair, I refrained from letting him have an earful!
As I think back, I've only had to personally deal with 3 negative reactions but believe me, I straightened them right out!

I have learned that less is more in terms of products but I'm trying to curb my PJ ways! I am moving to more natural products.

Stay tuned!

My Journey

Friends!
June 2008
My Nappiversary is June 11th! I will have been natural for 1 Full Year!
I am so excited about this journey. The past year has been great. Please read my Journal to the left for more about my thoughts!
I will close with much love and thanks to my sisters of Fotki! You all helped me make it through my first year! I'm looking forward to sharing more with you! Love you guys!

I was thrilled and honored to have been Motowngirl.com's April 2008 Spotlight! Natural hair is so beautiful to me. Don't let Erykah or India or Jill give a concert! These sisters bring more understanding to the world about our choice to being natural and happy! Recently, Jill was in Memphis and shortly afterwards, I had more people commenting about my natural hair and giving positive comments. On a regular basis now, I hear about "so and so" has gone natural. I think some women need to be assured that it will be ok if you do!

I have learned so much about my hair. I could not have imagined that I would be scarfing down Pre-Natal vitamins when we are NOT trying to get pregnant, removing blemishes with Baking Soda, slathering on Shea Butter and putting all kinds of concoctions on my hair: sulfur, cayenne pepper and Monistat???!!! My mom thinks I'm going to blow the roof off my house! But you ladies of Fotki got me open!

After transitioning for 10 months and 2 days, I big chopped!!! I was excited to be natural again. I cut my hair once after a bad braid take-down. I was not planning or ready to be natural. I bought a wig. This time, after getting fed up with my hair, I had my last relaxer: August 8, 2006.

Transition styles: 2 Strand Twists & Microbraids

Final Braid Take Down and Mini-Chop: June 11, 2007

The Big Chop: June 16, 2007

What I Know For Sure About Being Natural:
It takes a courageous woman to be natural. You will get all kinds of stares and comments. The compliments may be few and far in-between. But I love it!

Naturally Speaking

After the big chop, I have been trying to get acquainted with my hair. I've turned into a mini Product Junkie trying to find just the right mix for my hair. I have learned a lot from the boards and have found some great tips. My personal favorites right now are Pantene Hydrating Curls Conditioner, Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel, Fantasia Hair Polishing Gel, Cantu Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream and ORS Lock & Twist Gel. I was able to co-wash my hair after my hubby shaped up the 'fro and add the products for a mini curly fro. As I have not worn my hair out yet in public, after a little tweaking, a mini twisty 'fro will be my debut!

Superbowl.MardiGras.AshWed

This will be a big week with all of the aforementioned events. I'm enjoying the last hurrah of my favorite sport: football.

I will get all the bad stuff done by Tuesday because by Wednesday, I'm planning to make some changes.
1. I will give up sodas and drink more water and juices for Lent.
2. I will make NO impulsive PJ purchases during this time unless I run out of a staple which I don't anticipate this happening!
3. I will use my MN/Sulfur mixture nightly and co-wash as needed.
4. I will prepoo with amla and Vatika oils.
5. I want to get a protective style in March, such as kinky twists or box braids, to last until June 11 my 1 Year Nappiversary! Undecided.

40 Days Off

March 2008
After 40 days, I have updated my album. I was able to control my PJ urges!!! However I DID purchase a Maxiglide just before my hiatus but had to send it back to HSN because it leaked water and would not stay hot! I cannot say whether I liked it or not because I could not get it to work. I did reorder the miniglide and it did work but I have yet to straighten my whole head. I do plan to repurchase a Maxiglide in the future.
I can see growth. My hair is getting sooo thick! I know that less is more but until I use up most of my initial PJ purchases. . .
I am looking forward to my 1 year Nappiversary June 11, 2008!!!

I am still learning and loving my natural hair.

Took the 'fro out

June 22, 2007 was my first time taking the 'fro out of the house. A girlfriend was having a gathering and invited us over. Other than my husband, I had not told anyone outside of my online peeps of my BC. I was nervous. I was about to press my hair and finally came to my senses. Just do it! I did it and got over that initial shock!!!

Thinking about locing

The recent news events have really shook me to the core. Change is on the horizon. For me, I am thinking about locing my hair. I will be 40 in less than a month. More change. I am happy being natural. I don't know if I know what to expect during the initial process and I"m nervous. I have to research and stalk some Fotki loc albums for sure.
