In June - July the days are usually hot and stuffy, the sun scorches mercilessly and it is possible to hide from the heat only in the house in the afternoon, outside is too hot. On the contrary, in the evening the house is close, but it is much better in the street.
After sunset the heat lessens, the air freshens, and one begins to breathe easily. It is silent there is not even any wind - even on an aspen that grows behind a shed, the leaves do not tremble. From the closeness of the house there is rescue only in the street. On nights such as this which are silent and warm, the whole family sleeps outside under the stars.

On the ground, near a wall of the house, on part of a garden, my father spread fresh hay for a bed. The hay was covered with bedsheets, blankets, pillows, everything, and all except for grandmother who slept in the house, were put to bed in the open air.
Near to our sleeping area outside pink bushes blossomed, exhaling a wonderful smell, and from the fresh hay came the fragrant smell of grasses. Even now I cannot encounter this smell indifferently.
Once, I woke up before everyone else. The sun had not yet risen above the cherry trees, and all around was still shadowed with the end of the night. All still slept. Nearby our bed on a court yard went, clucking, a broody hen with small, still fluffy chickens.
I got out of bed and caught a chicken, and, having caught it, took it into my head to baptise him in water that was in a barrel under a drainpipe. I do not know, how long a time I bathed him, but when he, having suffered much with the water, was already half-dead, I threw him away and caught another, and this one too was "baptised". Thus some chickens were ruined. The brood hen was disturbed, and began to make loud clucking noises, and from this noise my mother woke up. Having seen what I have done, she sighed and firmly flogged me.
Therefore those fertile summer nights in the open air, an adventure with chickens and, certainly, my mother are remembered fondly by me | | |
